Serenity Discussion

If I would have put a pure prog metal song up as the sample such as "Circle of Life," would the normally close-minded power fans have given them a second thought or bothered to check out more? At least they had a chance this way (and I'm betting it pays off in spades in the long run).

Actually, I wasn't aware that you had put any Serenity song up anywhere. Unless maybe you're refering to the PPUSA IX video? I would expect you to use it there, as it's the song the band is presenting to the world. I was refering to their MySpace page and their web page, both of which have a longer sample of "Reduced To Nothingness" plus a couple of 18 second clips from others. The other clips really aren't long enough to tell anything about the style of the band.

I don't dislike Serenity, and I think "Reduced to Nothingness" is a very good song, although for me it's the best they have to offer. However, I still don't think it's a good idea for them to showcase this song. At least not only this song. They should have longer and more representative song clips in addition to this one.

Naturally they'll still appeal to the fans who like both Progressive and Power Metal, much like Pyramaze for example. I wouldn't think "Circle Of My 2nd Life" or "Canopus 3" would be any less appealing to people like Cheiron. However, Prog snobs may dismiss tham as a Sonata Arctica clone, which is a disservice to the band. Conversely Power Metal purists that believe they've found a Sonata Arctica clone are going to be sorely dissapointed.

Serenity reminds me of Vision Divine. Not sure if I'm alone in that. But definite cross appeal. And I know what you mean Magius. But even that song has enough proggy moments that one should get some hint that its not pure power metal. And you are right, I like Canopus 3 a lot ;)

My musical philosophy is to enjoy something for what it is instead of not liking it for what it isn't.

Hmm...that statement makes perfect sense and completely confuses me at the same time...

...an enigma wrapped in a mystery...

I'm so glad you posted that. It gives me the perfect opportunity to say... "Bite me!"

While I may not be in love with it, they keep my attention enough that I won't be at the vendors during their set.

Dude, Magius, you're awesome man. haha.

I stray away from really proggy bands that aren't upbeat, I guess thats why I like Pagan's Mind so much. Proggy, but they're faster paced and not boring. Thats what I like about Serenity as well, they don't bore me at all.

Not so mysterious really. Like it for what it is... a good song. Don't dislike it for what it's not... innovative, original, or even unique etc.

I once proposed way back in this thread that if Sonata Arctica is the new Stratovaroius as far as status goes, then perhaps a band like Power Quest could become the next Sonata. Zod asked "Who would be interested in a third generation Stratovarious?" I could only answer "I’d be interested in a 3rd generation version of Stratovarius if they’re good at what they do."

I 'helped' Interview Georg (the singer) when they supported Threshold/Kamelot in London a few weeks ago. Had a really good chat with him - and the rest of the band later, and they seem to be incredibly honest and down-to-earth. They suffered by only playing four songs as the doors opened, but they gave it 110%. They do wear their influences on their sleeves in places, but they're not a clone of any particular style/band. Looking forward to having them at PPUK and seeing what they can really do

They just look like they're having a lot of fun, and can't believe they're playing shows with bands they've been fans of for years.

I fell in love with their album when I bought it a while back. I was ecstatic when they were announced for PP. As excited as I am for Jon Oliva's Pain and Iron Savior... Right now, Serenity is the top draw for me.

I'm ALL OVER their CD and have been for the past few months since the day it landed in my CD player in the car, LOL! :) I was the hysterical and EXTREMELY LOUD screamer a few rows behind the sound board when Serenity was announced that night - wouldn't be surprised if they heard me all the way over in Austria, LOL! Certainly they draw from a lot of influences (even my beloved Savatage!!) but they have a sound of their own that I love. I haven't been this excited about a CD from a previously unknown band in a long, long time - can't wait for PP IX to see them! If you don't own this disc yet, get it pronto!!

Cheerios!

This reminds of a funny encounter I had at Best Buy last week.

I was in Best Buy as I needed to get a decent headset for chatting over Skype at work with one of my coworkers that is usually off-site. Anyway, I had some time to kill and I had my trusty ol' iPod with me. I decided to go play around with the iPod speaker setups so I queued up Serenity's "Engraved Within" off of this Word's Untold album, inserted the iPod into the Apple's Hi-Fi speaker, and proceeded to just crank the living shit out of the thing! :muahaha: Oh, the satisfaction of drowning out that rap crap that they usually have playing in those stores! :heh: Anyway, some dude seem to have come out of nowhere and asked me, "Who is that? That is just AWESOME!". Turned out this guy was all into the Dream Theater, Symphony X and the like and is always looking for more. Explained it was Serenity, which was a brand new outfit and this is their very first album, which has fairly recently came out. I proceeded to play some Firewind, Sonata Arctica, Poverty's No Crime, and a few others for him. Went on and told him about seeing shows locally at Jaxx as well as going to ProgPowerUSA. Ah yes, another satisfied fan!

Also to add. My first experience with Serenity was when I heard the "Canopus 3" track being played over the AOL Radio Power Metal station of all things. I had it streaming through my computer but I was in another room when it was playing. I was like, hmm, another Sonata Arctica song at first (I swear, at least to me, the vocals do sound a lot like Tony Kakko's). I then listen to it a bit more and was thinking, "Wait! That is not Sonata Arctica! Who is that - that is friggan awesome!" I ran over to the computer to look and immediatly did a search on eMusic, and holy shit, there it was! Immediatly downloaded it (thankfully, I still had some downloads left in my quota!). I ended up buying the actual CD at Strangeland Records up in Annandale.

This really is an incredible disk and so looking forward to seeing these guys at PPU IX. Even better to hear they are coming out with a new album.

I had my mp3 on random today and "Engraved Within" came up and I was stopped in my tracks...caught in a moment. A big smile came across my face when I read the name.
