Riverside Discussion

Patrick,

I thought Riverside was completely a simple, minimalist, boring band. And then I heard the Panic Room 02 single. I really liked this song. So I figured I'd give them a shot and check them out again when Rapid Eye Movement came out. I then really enjoyed that album (current one). So I went back and listened to their first two albums, and the Voices Inside My Head, EP, and became a definite fan.

Band is best listened to with full concentration and headphones imo. If you stop paying attention the songs can go by you and the music completely missed. But there is a lot going on in the songs, the emotion is huge, and the songs are just great to listen to. But you have to listen =D

I think that the energy in the audience won't be of a 'HEY! HEY! HEY!' quality, but in a concentrated enjoyment of the music and their performance of it.

Cherion,

I disagree - but agreeing to disagree with respect because that is one of the peculiar things about progressive music, the definitions vary from person to person.

While I enjoyed their sets, and did see some "glimmers" of prog, I wasnt blown away with musical prowess neccessarily - but they were ripping good performances that's for sure.

edited to note: I agree that AF compositions semi-qualify them to be considered prog (in one sense)

list.

Admittedly, I am new to PP for VIII, but frankly was "bewildered" at why the fest is called ProgPower when I heard so little prog being performed.

In Europe, progpower means the "power of progressive music." I use the term differently. It is a hybrid word meaning "progressive & power metal.- ProgPower" If I booked all prog bands as the original intent of the name, I wouldn't sell 50% of my tickets.

It is interesting to see how different people's views are on exactly what is prog. Some were complaining there was too much prog this year. One person even went as far as to say Raintime is a prog band. Meanwhile some prog fans only considered Redemption to be the one prog band. Others only have occasional elements which hardly make them out to be a prog band to them.

I'd say some bands can be defined as ProgPower bands....Threshold arn't really *that* Prog anymore, and they're not really power...but they fit PERFECTLY into a ProgPower gig :)

all i have to say is thank u glenn for riverside. btw this is my very first post and PPUSA VIII was my first and i will be coming for many more
:kickass:

I want to thank Glen for the hard work he puts into this fest every year. I cant imagine what it is like trying to walk the tight rope between the power heads and the prog lovers. As for me Riverside is just to mello. A very talented band but just not for me. But to those who are fans of the band it is good to see you get a chance to see them. Perhaps in the future Glen will push the limits on the power metal side and bring in The almighty Power/Speed metal Kings ANNIHILATOR.

All I can say is that I'll be counting the days.hours, and minutes till I finally get to see this band.
Easily the most anticipated band since Conception, and maybe even more so.

There are no cookie vox on the albums, if that is what you mean...

Check this video, it is the "hardest" one I saw after a 5 second search on utube:

definitely didn't mean cookie monster vox, I was mostly just wanting some more upbeat material. Im checking that out right now though.

*done checking it out*

I ...I...ehh...*looks around cautiously* It was ok, until it didn't go anywhere. It seemed like it was, and then everything went back to the slow.

*prepares to get bludgeoned and stoned*

I, for one as i stated at the very beginning, was not familiar at all with anything by RIVERSIDE, buttttttttttt now i have their latest CD and i must admit, though not as upbeat as say PATHOSRAY or ANDROMEDA, i really like RIVERSIDE, and if my brother Milton thinks they are awesome then they have to be something i would enjoy and they are, so I can now say i am looking forward to seeing them.

I must say after listening to The Ultimate Trip part1 ...I like Riverside when they have the upbeat side going. The slow side can get a little irritating, partially because I suppose Im an impatient listener. Also, I love the way Dance with the Shadow starts out, it really caught my attention.
