Just ordered the Slate Samples...

...and I kind of feel like I've betrayed myself.

I've always used my own samples, with the exception of a few kicks I've found floating around the internet. Just felt the need for some more diversity lately and it's rare that I get drums in the studio worthy of sampling and reusing. I have 5 full sets of a friends Yamaha Oak Custom kit with different heads and tunings and they're getting a little tired. Anyway, I hope I like them and can work well with them. I was NOT a fan of the free snare he released a while ago.

On a side note, I've also been thing about picking up a copy of Podfarm later this week. What the fuck is going on here? Am I slipping toward the dark side? :erk:

I love those yamaha oak kits also. My drummer has his eye on one. KSE's End of Heartache is a Yamaha Oak I believe... huge drum sound on that record

Naw, I think you're just after a quicker way of working. Not every project coming through is sporting a Pearl Masters, with brand new heads, and a doofus trained at hitting them correctly. There's only so many sounds you can really get by reusing the samples you've created yourself. The Slate stuff gives you a bank of very usable drum sounds to augment (and I stress 'augment', not 'replace') what you've tracked. If you use them sparingly, you won't sound like every other bedroom joe out there using them these days.

I'm thinking of grabbing Podfarm too! For bass processing of all things! Need to get some good grit going on bass, and Splatt always seems to have such nice chunk with this thing. Considering either that or starting to reamp the bass grit through my TS and a friend's SVT Classic preamp.

Yea, I'll definitely be blending with my samples and the mics.

I hadn't even though of Podfarm for bass. Was planning on using it for the old ball ambient FX track or maybe some cleans and leads here and there, but who knows. Joey pulls some killer tones out of it. Different from a real amp but not in a bad way.

i was really tempted by the PCIe cards when they dropped the price.....guess i kind of convinced myself what i already have is fine.

still kind of interested though, not sure of many with one round here. think there are a few folk with uad's

I remember they had some reliability problems when they first came out but I think that was mostly related to the firewire bus. I wonder if these are any more stable?

Might be a question where I can actually get some useful information at gearslutz.

yeah, gs may be a better place to see how its going down - i remember looking a while ago and things seemed pretty good for it.

also good luck with podfarm and the slate samples, im sure you'll be putting them to great use! I actually use it a hell of a lot for the bass, there are quite a few amp models in there that seem to work great (esp when used with the sansamp) and the 4x10 models are pretty cool too. its also really useful just for the extra parts that dont really need to be reamped
