It's a great disc...easily the best Katatonia CD from what I've heard. And the only album of theirs that I've heard which I could say is totally consistent (in my opinion)

Very very good album. And yeah, Mikael only executes the growls, so to speak. He's also on the "Sounds of Decay" EP. Both are essential Doom/Death.

you only think that is their best album because you are one of those people who get upset when their fav bands start getting fans and learn how to play and write in a more sophisticated way. last fair deal is their best album, of course.

I was very exited to listen to brave murder day when I finally got it after hearing so much about it ... but I was very disappointed actually ... their current style is so much better if you ask me. I'm not a fan of their first album ...

i disagree. BMD is their best album, thats obvious. i like new Katatonia as much as old Katatonia but LFDGD is easily their weakest effort for me. the songs on VE and TGCD are so much stronger. BMD however is an unmatched monument. i actually see old and new Katatonia as two different bands because their old releases are so difficult to compare with those from DO on...BigFakeSmile said:

this doesn't mean LFDGD is a shitty album. it's still pretty good. Tonight's Music, Future Of Speech, Sweet Nurse and Teargas are great, but the other songs don't give me as much chills...

brave murder day has a very simplistic, dark and, last but not least, crushing atmosphere. the band has matured to greater levels with their newer albums but this album stands on its own as a true piece of art...and not everyone can handle its tone.
you can clearly see/hear that jonas' lyrics in english and fluency with the language have a long way to go, but he definitely achieved that after tonight's decision...especially with last fair deal gone down, which happens to be my fave katatonia album.

This is their only Doom/Death CD I could stand next to Sounds Of Decay. One of the best Doom/Death Releases Ever.
Dance Of December Souls and For Funerals To Come were just not my thing. Only a few songs off those were appealing to me.
Their Depressive Rock era is the best.

I like pie.
this may seem pretty ludicrous coming from me, but i think in this particular case, this concept holds true. i think its hard to compare/contrast in a "whats better" way with katatonia's different eras. Obviously theyre all different from the previous, with the two ends being VERY different from eachother, but all of which are top notch albums in their own right and respected sounds. Dance of december souls and last fair deal being my 2 favorites, but katatonia really has no bad album in my opinion. Some are more minimalist than others...some more "metal" than others, and some more pop oriented than others, sure. But one thing is ALWAYS consistant with katatonia, and that is that they deliver an emotive, dark, catchy and memorable album every time. It really comes down to which katatonia era speaks to you more i guess...but to compare which one is best overall is pretty futile in my eyes.

I never really loved Mike's vocals on the two Katatonia releases...but it was for the same reason I didn't love his death vocals on Morningrise. Not sure what it is, but he sounds so much more powerful on basically everything else he has ever done.
But whatever, still a great release...not a bad song on there.
Oh, and on a side note: The Great Cold Distance is fantastic (finally out in the U.S.)...so go get it
