Katatonia

YUp, you are correct sir! And TD kicks major ass also.

Okay I'm thinking of getting one of thier albums which is the best one to start with? Brave Murder day, last fair deal, or viva emptiness?

Last Fail Deal is a really good album. The first I heard by them. Brave Murder Day is good also, but it takes a while to get used to. I would get them in this order" Last Fair Deal, Brave Murder Day, then Viva Emptiness. Last Fair Deal is definitly one of their best, check it out.

I think Viva Emptiness first. Excellent production, great songs, great flow. Last Fair Deal Gone Down is very good, but the production is not nearly as good as VE, and I just don't like the songs as much on Last Fair Deal.

 YES! Katatonia is an incredible band (one of my faves) and this is definitely their BEST album. I own all of them except for their debut (which I have heard and is damn good.)

Songs like Teargas are just TOO damn brilliant. Sweet Nurse and The Future of Speech are almost just as brilliant.

The eps prior to Brave murder day and Dance of December Souls are all better (than BMD). Brave murder day has that monotonous drum beat the majority of the time, but it still is a good record. "For funerals to come" is more amazing I think with the longer more more ambitious songs. The two tracks from that ep remind of Blackrose Immortal in a way even though not as long. To hear the "doom/death" eps of that era, I recommend buying the "Brave yesterdays" 2 disc compilation, it also features a couple tracks each from Dance of December Souls and Brave Murder Day. Buy those 2 albums as well...as for the alternative direction DISCOURAGED ONES is the best BY FAR.

Katatonia is amazing...

Brave Murder Day > Viva Emptiness > Discouraged Ones > Tonights Decision > Last Fair Deal Gone Down > Dance Of December Souls

Ahhh.. I love this band.. I just hated their "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and "Tonight's Music" Cd's .. However, I loved Dance of December Souls along with Brave Murder Day, For Funerals To Come, and Sounds Of Decay.. And When they turned mellow, all I really liked was Saw You Drown, Discouraged Ones, and Viva Emptiness.. I hope their new release is as Good as Viva.. Haha..

But If you are about ot get into them and want something similar to Opeth, START WITH BRAVE MURDER DAY. Especially Since it has Mike on Vocals.

I don't understand why people who like Opeth should start with Brave Murder Day (except for the fact that Mikael does the vocals) ... It's nothing close to Opeth, and I can' really stay focused throughout the entire album.
Their newer stuff comes closer to the Opeth-sound sometimes, in the mellow parts that is. Listen to the song Omerta (from Viva Emptiness) and you'll think you are listening to a hidden track on Damnation!
But other than a (far sought) comparison with Opeth, I really like Katatonia ... they have this really melancholic sound wich I love, Black Session is my favourite song.
I think it's useless to seek for a comparison with Opeth everytime ... Just listen to every band on it's own.

I love Katatonia. Of course, the musicianship isn't as outstanding as Opeth, but in some ways Katatonia can stand in Opeth's league. For example, Jonas Renske OWNS Mikael Akerfeldt as a lyricist. And his singing, while perhaps not as strong or confident, carries in it a fragility and emotional strength that Mike hasn't quite yet achieved.
Stylistically, they really bear little resemblence to Opeth. They write short, more conventional songs. But that isn't to say they are weak for it.
Last Fair Deal Gone Down is an album of classic songs, from start to finish. Damn near perfect IMO. Viva Emptiness is a little heavier, and a little more complex (by Kata standards), Not quite so strong as a whole, but excellent.
The 2 albums prior to these are superb, but lack the tightness, skill, and production quality. Also, Renske's voice falters on these recordings. Their earlier doom stuff is great... but not what they're best at. It's like Anathema... what they started with is fine, but what they have moved on to FAR surpasses it.
And as far as what I've heard of The Great Cold Distance is concerned... wow!!! Roll on March!!!!

For an Opeth fan, I would recommend starting with Brave Murder Day (as I did when it was released) as most of the vocals on this album are done by Mikael.
i second this...

and the new album is going to be AMAZING.

Katatonia are AWESOME!!! "Dance of December Souls", "Brave Murder Day" and "Viva Emptiness" are fucking masterpieces!!!

Renkse and Nyström are true legends!!!

BTW, Renkse and Åkerfeldt were roommates during the "MAYH" recording If I am not mistaken!?

Åkerfeldt should form a progressive metal band in the vein of Opeth along with Renkse, Nyström and Swanö!!! That would be so awesome!!!

Good idea, but I doubt that will happen, seeing as Mike has already been in a death metal band with the aforementioned individuals. It was called Bloodbath, if you haven't heard of it, and Mike pulled out because he 'doesnt have time'.

So, no awesome side project for us
