Kiss my ass Joey Tempest...

Aggree with Matt once again....

Edit = By the way, if you need an example of an extremely talented musician whose songs have lots of depth and knows a lot about politics (a lot more than you by the way), try Daniel Glidenlow from Pain Of Salvation...

I already responded in this thread but reading this post again I thought I'd point out a few things my Swedish friend has told me:

Their summers can reach temperatures of 104 farenheit

They have some if the most well preserved forests in europe and are one of the cleanest countries in the world.

They have one of the highest ratios of people per internet access in the world.

They are one of the wealthiest nations in the world.

For a country thats supposed to be bleak and desolate it sounds pretty nice to me. And no Bush either! (although I don't know how good/bad their president/prime minister/warlord/head viking/whatever Sweden calls its ruler is).

My point was...I don't know shit about Sweden...so you don't hear me bashing it...I thought that was clear...

See, that's what kills me... Not going personal against you, ashaman7122, but in general... The average American does not know SHIT about other countries around the world and still have in his mind that the US is much better than any other country in the world... And as much as a lot of people may disagree with me, deep inside you know that this happens everyday...

It's okay to be proud for being an American, let me tell you, this is a great fucking country... But don't you think you're the best one in all aspects nor you would be okay by itself... Cause that shows pure ignorance!

Yepyep. I was reading his research list for 'BE' the other day; very impressive.

Yeah dude, there's a few papers that he wrote on different subjects on the download section in the POS website... Fucking unbelievable!!

No offense taken, AngraRules...

You're right...ignorance is rampant. It amazes me when I travel that people tell me, "You don't sound like you're from Texas," or even better yet, "You don't ACT like you're from Texas," like I'm supposed to be some backward ass fuck inbred hick...

It just goes to show...people only know what they're exposed to...and if all they're exposed to is myth, stereotypes, and gross generalizations perpetuated by media mumbo-jumbo and mass public perception...then that's all they're going to "know."

One of my favorite quotes is from Scott Ian. "It's a free country, and everyone is allowed to suck if they want to." Well...sometimes people just suck...

And...by the way...I don't own a fucking horse...so quit asking...

Rock on!

I see that now we've just fallen back on our standard talking points rather than addressing the post that started all this.

What Tempest said may have been intended as nice, but it was condescending and patronizing. As I said before, it also made use of a standard conceit among Europeans that I hear all too often. Some of you have criticized the US for being conceited about its greatness or whatever. Fine. What of Tempest and other Europeans, who think that the age of their civilization(which is not all that old either) means something? Does he really think that because there was a Sweden in the Middle Ages and there wasn't a United States in say, 1600, means something?

If there's one thing we've learned, it's that age just as frequently means close-mindedness and inflexibility as wisdom.

Is the reverse not also true? Do people from other nations who know nothing of the US not bash Americans everyday? In their media, their protests, their flag burnings? Being from another country myself, I assure you this is the case.

I personally have been to over a dozen countries, some of them for prolonged periods, and none of them can compare to the USA. And while it's true that America should not wish to exist all by itself, it is one of very few nations that COULD be selfsustaining if the need arose. I have to ask myself "If the country I come from ceased to exist, would it really affect the world as a whole? The hard answer, regardless of how I feel about it, is honestly "No." And that is the case for most Nations, regardless of how much their people may dislike the notion.

No shit, my point also. When I went to Germany for Wacken, I got that all the time. Talk to someone for 2 lousy minutes, and they all came back with "You're pretty cool... for an American", which proves they don't know SHIT. Why?? Because if they think I'm cool, they'd love the 'average' American. I'll be polite, but at the same time, I always stand up for my beliefs, whether it's religion/politics/blah blah blah... The power of the media is sickening. It makes me wonder how people would feel about this country if they just lived here for awhile instead of accepting whatever their own media (and government) feeds them.

Bottom line - I spent days on end with people from countries all over Europe, and they all grilled me on Bush and Iraq. And after voicing my positive opinions for each, and my REASONS for those feelings, they were all very accepting. It's like they thought I was there to blow something up until they saw I was unarmed. All it took was asking them, "What would you do if 9/11 happened in Hamburg?", "How would you feel if your president DIDN'T do what ours is trying to do to right this?".

I think what we have here is the general attitude that the US deserves to be criticized and should take it, but that Europe must not be criticized by Americans.

What we have here is a presumption of moral superiority by Europeans and Europhiles.

In some countries maybe. Have you stopped to think that the reasons for their protests and etc maybe due to a specific action or attitude or stand point that America has taken? Dude, I am from a different country as well.. Believe me, most countries know more about the US than you think. If there's a country in which people are too self centered to think about any other place in the world but themselves, this country is the USA. (again a lot of you guys will criticize me for this... it's just my opinion based on what I've lived in and out the US)

I agree that the world would be strongly affected if America ceased to exist. Mostly in bad ways, for some in good ones. I still disagree that the US could be self sustaining. I could give you an example : Oil

Don't forget that America's media has a pretty sickening power as well!

Personally, I think September 11 was something that not only Americans will mourn forever, but the whole world as well. I am from a different country, but I live only a few miles outside of NY and boy, tears come from my eyes everytime I stop and think about that day... But on the other hand, it seems that for every single action that president Bush takes in the Middle East people say "it's because of what happened in 9/11. One thing is to remember and honor this tragic day for the rest of our lives, another thing is to use it as an excuse to go after other countries. I don't believe Bush was really trying to help the Iraqis when he sent troops into Iraq. It seems to me and a lot of other people that it was a matter of preventing something else happening to the United States. To some extent that is okay, however, he should have concentrated in going after people that did that not only to Americans, but the world as well, instead of going after a political enemy of his father. It was a fact that Iraq couldn't possibly do anything to the USA... The excuse was proof of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. Guess what? He found nothing. This weapon of mass deception that Bush ended up creating caused more casualties than Sep. 11 itself. Don't forget that many of them, were fellow American soldiers, whom I give them eternal respect.

The amount of oil in Alaska would not be able to satisfy the whole country's needs and that is a proven fact.

Also... do you have a caring heart to remember that there's dozens of wild species of animals that could be in a danger of extinction if the drilling takes place? Does that touch you at all?

BULLSHIT #1: Scientists do NOT know how much oil lies in Alaska's vast reserves, but they do believe it may be enough to last us until alternative energy sources are developed.

BULLSHIT #2: Drilling a few small holes in Alaska and causing massive environmental concerns is like saying if you pop that ugly zit on your nose you'll need a tourniquet to keep from bleeding to death. Look at a map, it's a tiny dot of space. Dude, they're not gonna use nukes to blast giant craters down to the oil. We're talking a hole that would fit in your bathroom and still leave you enough room to walk around it (on the way to the mirror to pop that zit.)

Now, put down the Playstation and go do your homework.

By the way, Hillary, do you know why some people think animals will actually be threatened by Alaskan drilling? NOT because of some massive pollution to the air or depletion of forests, but because, and this is their serious answer: They're afraid the couple dozen workers travelling to and from the drill sites will be careless and hit the animals that are crossing the roads with their work vehicles. Are you FUCKING kidding me? Go to Minnesota during deer hunting season. You almost have to drive OFF the road to avoid hitting all the road kill. Sucks, to be sure. Believe me, I'm an animal lover all the way. But on this, the fact is, people are being stubborn, as opposed to rational. I was against it myself until I started listenting closely to the arguments from both sides.

That's what the beloved American media says man.... Keep that in mind.

I'm assuming you're not a professional in Oil Drilling, and I don't think you're very accurate when regards of the size or amount of holes they would be drilling. Do you seriously think that they're only gonna use that much room?

I can guarantee you that I haven't touched the Playstation in a very long time. As for my homework, I finally got done with my classes in college so I don't have any to do. You're probably thiinking I'm just another 16yr old teen that has to complain about everything. Guess what buddy, you're wrong.

My cousin lives in Alaska as an ecologist. He says the worst problem is the wildlife "sucks up" to the pipeline for warmth and food and the worst ecological proplem is the INCREASE in species along the pipeline. He's been there 6 years. Go figure.
