First post etc, felt like making an account after reading for a long time.

But really, what do you guys think of LastFM? I use it rarely due to thinking it'll be full of mainstream stuff i'd hate, but after a few hours of playing today it's not actually that bad.

Opinions/Discussion, GO! :)

its very good for recommendations...I come up with names to check out every couple of weeks from it usually with at least 1 gem amongst them... Last.fm was how I initially heard about Brain Drill before they got signed and such... for the social aspect? not worth it just stick to the music

yea i just use the last fm music player, I don't put much time into the actual website. I hear a lot of stuff I've never heard before on there. I think its great.

I really enjoy seeing what I listen to over time, as the vast majority of my listening is done on my computer.

The recommendation system is a joke, but the "similar artists" function can find you a gem or two if you look well enough.

I like having it to keep track of what i listen to and the similar artists thing is cool sometimes. i don't use it for the social aspect like having people as friends or anything on there, just for the music aspect.

I use last.fm when i listen to music on my pc, but that is not frequent. I use it a lot to listen to samples of albums before downloading them.

As already said, mainly for two reasons.
1.To check out my charts, what I've been listening to.
2.Similar artist tag...usually has good recs there.

Well, it can useful for finding similar artists to your favorites.Even if in the majority of cases, they're not similar at all, just have shared fan-bases.
I used to troll the shout-boxes there for a short while, but it isn't fun anymore.
I can get all the great recs from people on RateYourMusic.com. Or here.

I only use it for scrobbling and browsing the site, to see what I've been playing, that's fun. It even goes as far as influencing what I play, sometimes I play a band more for the fact that I want them higher in my charts rather than because I really wanna hear them at that moment. Or I avoid a band to not have it go up in my charts ;) that's wrong of course.

I once used the recommendation system and was quite surprised by what it was playing to me, nothing that would remotely interest me, I wonder how it came to those recommendations, made no sense considering my taste.

Anyway, it's a very good and clever site I think.

I like the concept of it tracking my listening habits, but the statistics are clearly always gonna be somewhat deceiving. While I do normally listen to anything in digital form (CD, mp3) on a computer since my speakers are pretty good quality, there's still a lot of cassettes and vinyl unaccounted for. Same with anything I listen to in the car, and there's no scrobbler for my mp3 player unless I wanna take the time to write one myself. Still a cool idea though.
