Personally, what do you prefer?

To further clarify, which of the following choices would you pick:

- Listening to the best of musicians, who emulate upon an already established style of music of your choice.

OR

- Musicians with limited talent who nonetheless pioneered an original sound.

Both choices have their advantages and disadvantages so be sure to include reasons as to why you chose what you chose.

I can't seem to decide yet >_<.

the innovators and those who came within a few years after them are usually the best of the genre anyway so its not really necessary to choose

I'm not sure of the measure of divergence here, but lots of people prefer Grand Belials Key to Celtic Frost or something.

Ok wait I suck at BM.

...but lots of people prefer Psycroptic to Necrovore or something*

the best bands don't always feature the best musicians, it's all about what they do collectively, so if a band come up with an "original and excellent sound", then obviously them rather than another bandwagon jumper band.

Trend-jumpers are shit.

For example, Children of Bodom did a lot for metal with Something Wild, Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper. Now instead of paving new roads with their music, they seem to be following their influences too much with Hate Crew Deathroll and Are You Dead Yet?

Now I perfer to listen to the bands that followed them. Norther, Kalmah, etc.

It depends on what I'm in the mood for. I notice mostly with black metal I listen to those that paved the roads for other bands instead of the ones following behind.

Wasn't it Sentenced that set the grounds for heavy/power with harsh vocals in the first place? That would mean you would prefer the first category.

"Trend followers" aren't necessarily bad bands, they just follow an already established blueprint layed out for them and possibly even refining on the style.

I don't think every single band who play an already generally existing genre (perhaps improving or besting it) are necessarily "trend-hoppers," although there are certainly a whole......lot.
