My band is about to start recording our first album, and our choice of local studios is rather limited. Going abroad is unfeasible due to time constraints mainly (i.e. we all have jobs).

So, I was thinking of doing some of the recording ourselves (drums, guitar DIs, bass DI, vocal, keyboards), and having someone from this board reamp the guitars and then mix and master the whole thing. We do have a budget for it, but we're not exactly rich :).

I have a M-Audio Profire 2626, a pair of Samson SDCs, a set of the crappiest Thomann mic set for drums (intended for replacement) and a SM57.

Anyway, here is one song, which would be indicative of what we can achieve.

Notes for the above files:
1. Drums are recorded on 7 channels: overheads, kick, snare, 3 toms. I have one spare channel but I'm not sure what would be best to record on it.
2. At least kick and snare must be replaced, they sound like ass.
3. The bass is also really crappy but I'll have a better one for the actual recordings (plus a real bass player, not me).

Here are 2 mixes I've done on this material: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/2155023/Soer280909.mp3, http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/2155023/Soer300909.mp3

If anyone is interested, please give a sample of what you can do with the above, and PM me with your rates and how much time you'd estimate you'd need for 10 or 11 tracks, with length from 4 to 7 minutes.

I'm also open to suggestions about improving the quality of the input material.

P.S. About the band: The band is called Sincarnate (http://www.myspace.com/Sincarnateband), and the style is death/doom-ish. I play the keyboards :)

Hi and welcome to the forum! i am in !

Like past bands doing the same as you , I can suggest you to post a limit date like 1 week from now on or something like that, cause if not this will be a big mess like always!

so i am downloading the files

now that I listen to them, they do sound funny. the weird is, i've checked them and they're not anywhere near the red zone, they seem to be peaking around -10 dB. I'm not sure what could be causing this.

I'm sorry about this. I'll try to get some decent sounding DIs up as soon as possible

Cool! The drums are pretty bad indeed, and unfortunately the drums are very sloppy too, fills were sloppy and sometimes drums were complety out of sync with the rest. The only thing i've done today is (digital :() reamping and drum-quantizing which is gonna be all Superior Drums. Because now that the drums are correct the OH's don't match. But that is less time consuming that quantizing everything. I think it's gonna sound cool in the end :)

Well here's my really really rough mix

Nothing has been automated, cleaned up, listened in detail or whatever, there's no verb or delay so it's all a little dry. But i wanted you guys to hear what i've been doing with my spare time lately ;) Drums are all SD 2.0 now, i could not get them to work the way i wanted them to work (maybe that's just me ;)) Guitars are SoloC and bass is a shitload of stuff. The ending with the blast sounds really chaotic cos it's not automated, so it's more sounding like a train is running over ya ;)

Sorry I broke the link, it's fixed now.

Muckypup: yes I did, but the whole reason I went through this was to see how our material would sound. Samples of your other work, while certainly interesting, are not what I'm looking for.

So if I put your tracks through my stuff, would you consider letting me do your songs?
