They seem to be sort of life-less/static even with some reverb and impulses (which make it sound much more full and life like) but it's still missing that dynamic edge. I haven't tried use guitar rig/amp sims or anything on it but wanted to get some opinions.

Since i record most of my guitars without amp sim. (one man one tone:cool:) i start liking the sound. Should i see a doctor?
But serious: i do think there are moments where di sound CAN be used. Depends on what you want to achieve.

Personally DI tones are becoming much better. With ReValver and the new Wagner plug, anything is possible for high gain and with some tweaking and dynamic playing, cleans are very achievable.

I find using a Guitar Rig 2 set up (don't remember off the top of my head) and some reverb make things come to life.

You're not used to hearing a direct guitar sound. You're used to a sound that's been tweaked to hell by a pissy speaker that hates flat things and isn't going to respond to the audio with 100% accuracy because it doesn't feel like it. Either amp it or figure out what you like about amped tones and try to emulate it.

The clean gtr sound that we are used to hearing is heavily colored by an amps' tone stack and speakers. That means that your totally direct to board gtr will have loads more mids and more very high end than you expect.

I noticed there is a huge mid hump in the DI guitar, I'm going to re-record some tonight on the new machine and then EQ it to taste and see what comes of it.
