what bands out there base their stuff, or atleast some stuff, on LOTR. i know they are out there, bands like blind guardian. and then bands that get their name from it like burzum and gorgoroth. so lets see how long the list gets
~gR~

the band name "amon amarth" is taken from LOTR meaning mount doom and countless (black metal) aliaes are also taken form the LOTR. the bands "cirith ungol" are "cirith gorgor" are from the books as well.

Battlelore is a big one too. They go so far as to dress their roles and do an awesome job with the makeup. Last album the members were dressed as orcs, Gollum, elves, and even an Ent. Great music too.

Also the band Cirith Ungol based their name on Tolkein. Cirith Gorgor is based on his work and is also a huge source of lyrical inspiration for them.

dunno but it sounds like a probable band name. i just remembered that dimmu borgir has some tolkien songs on their "stormblåst" album and then there's a spanish band called "arwen"... that about all i can think of for now.

edit: oh, and "elvenking" from italy.

LOTR is one of the major influances in lyrics in both power metal and black metal.

I think almost every power metal band has a Tolkien based song.

Call me what one will, but I am not a LOTR fan. I enjoyed the movies( although the trees getting up and doing battle was a bit ridiculous for me). I read the hobbit, and I didnt like it all. I tried to start on the first book in the ring series when the first movie came out- but it just lost my interest.

I suppose the problem is, I am not a fan of fantasy- I'd rather create my own symbolic fantasy worlds- then have another stuff his down my throat. The biggest reason I hate fantasy, is how non-human they seem to be- every one is virtous, and there is justice and order-or that justice, order, and other ideals can be won with a ring or magic sword or some other ridiculous plot line- fuck that- thats not human( although Tolkein seems to be a very human writer- in examing certain human emotions- still the whole ring thing being totally evil- and this eye being totally evil- why is he so fucking evil- nothing is that evil- it's to damn black and white for my taste).

I have always found it fascinating how many male fans there are of fantasy- even guys one would not expect to be fans. SO, I suppose it is natural that a genre so masculine( metal), would draw on this LOTR fascination. Still, I just cant believe how many bands- and good bands too- that play this Tolkein inspired material. Cant they make up their own stories and fantasy worlds- like a Mindcrime- or even some of these other power metal bands that have their own fantasy story lines?

Oh well those are just my opinions on the subject- take them for what they are- opinions. I really dont care if one likes fantasy- or if one doesnt agree with me.

If you feel that way about fantasy, read George R R Martin's The Song of Ice and Fire series. Completely human and believable characters and a complete abscene of good vs evil. Just distasteful vs slightly less distasteful.

Thorondor...I see where your name comes from. *without looking at my dictionary* Okay, Thorondor means King of Eagles. Then does Gondor mean King of Stone?

Luminous- even this slightly less distasteful book to me would be more of a waste of time, than watching one of those TV reality shows.
