Love of Live (part två)

My most recent show, in Seattle, where I saw Ensiferum. I have pics; they'll be uploaded later. They played at a club called Studio 7.

I got there early on to claim a perch spot in the balcony.

Shaded Emnity (a local Seattle band) was excellent, and I said hi to Zach. I tried saying hi to Rob, but I kept on saying hi to the wrong person - sorry random person! All you blond, long haired men look alike! Musicwise, they have a very harsh sound with a little bit of prog influence. Very tight band.

I also liked Deathmocracy. Name made me roll my eyes a bit (AMERIKKKA!), but the music made up for it. And the lead singer had a great stage presence and a great mic! I loved that lit up, old style microphone! Again, a local Seattle band, and again, they love their prog - even more than Shaded Emnity.

Lazurus AD seemed to be the odd band out, but I have to give them props for having a good stage presence, and for being from Kenosha, Wisconsin. Seriously - Wisconsin, where I'm from, isn't exactly known for their metal at times, especially when I was growing up. Glad to see then coughing up good bands now. And, I liked their retro sound, it was a good break from blast beats Blast Beats BLAST BEATS!!!!1! all night.

Blackguard was just excellent, and I wished they had a longer set. I loved watching the keyboardist especially - his hair was wider than his shoulders! They improved a lot, and I was able to thank one of the members afterwards for the good show.

Ensiferum is a band I'm not that familiar with, as I was looking forward to SE and Hypocrisy. But, US Customs seens to be thrown off by names with umlauts in them, so no Peter Tägtgren for us. But, I liked Ens. They seemed to be a letdown for me after the energy of Blackguard, however. I also had a beer spill on my purse, so I decided to call it a night towards the end of their set, and headed out to catch the train home.

Overall, an excellent show, and much better than my Mayhem experience a few months ago. (I wasn't feeling well that day and couldn't get into it.) Usually, in a show like this, there is one or two bands that I just can't stand. Not this show - they may not have been the style I liked, but I liked all the bands on the bill.

Nope, I considered it, but realized I don't really like any of those bands. Will be seeing Mortiis on 17-dec in Rotterdam though.
same here, the only ones i'm interested in are Thyrfing and Skyforger, both of which i've seen before, and not really such a huge fan of... I was originally going for Negura Bunget but they cancelled :cry: so i'm just going along with friends and we finally have a place to crush in Eindhoven so it should be fun! :headbang: curious to see those big names though!
Ah crap, lucky Dutch moth… (;)).
 what's that, some kind of slang? :p

 what's that, some kind of slang? :p

Yes, but I can't say it in Dutch cause I don't know :p .

I think that The Netherlands really gets good gigs, better than other countries in Europe. You get a lot of classic bands, but also great Prog festivals. Lucky you!

I saw Strung Out yesterday, never heard them nor seen them live before. They have great energy and the music is not that bad. And I got meself an awesome atom (planets?) shirt, which makes me look even nerdier  .

@ Qu Appelle: If you don't go to the Testament+Slayer+Megadeth gig in Seattle in February, you will feel the eternal wrath of a frustrated Costa Rican .

I guess I'll feel you flaming because I'm not going. :loco:
Tickets are $40+, and that's not including the fees. A serious chunk of dough. I wanted to go, but at that price, I can see two or three smaller shows, and support some local bands to boot. (One show this weekend is being held on the top of a roof of a Mexican restaurant in downtown Seattle :kickass:) If it gets closer to the show and someone is selling tickets cheap, I'll consider it. There were $8 tickets available, but they sold out almost immediately.

Sorry! I understand the frustration, believe me. I'm on the wrong side of the planet from my beloved Borknagar.

after Borknagar played here one of the only 3 gigs this year (not counting Wacken), we can't complain!!! and i'm going to move to Norway sooner or later, but this fact you mentioned is just about the only thing i'm afraid i'm going to regret leaving behind!! Though i'm keeping my fingers crossed as about 80% of my fav. bands come from Scandinavia anyway :D

Yuhuu! Seeing Paradise Lost / Samael tonight, and then again on Sunday! Life doesn't get any better than this....

The gig I intended to attend was cancelled :(
But Greg isn't on the tour anymore and I heard they are playing rather short sets so the loss isn't all too great. At least that's what I hope, hehe. But I am going to see what you have to say about the gigs ;)

Ah you damn ungrateful Yankee!!! :zombie:

C'mon 40 bucks is nothing for the bands you're seeing, I would kill to see any of those bands, but then again most people who see lots of bands never know how lucky they are.

Yeah The Netherlands really have a lot of great gigs.

Ahw, damn! Hadn't seen that before. Oh well, at least they're coming, and they have Samael with them as well, so I'm glad no matter what. :headbang:

Don't be too quick on the trigger there my friend; I admit I see a lot of stuff as well, but I'm right with you on killing for that trio. Sounds awesome!

:lol::lol: i thought it was something else..... next time just say the damn thing without any ambiguous abbreviations, it's not like mr.V will kick you out of here for using words like fuck one time too many :p:p

back on topic, i'm seeing Swallow the Sun, Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum on 8 dec. which are playing in my hometown :kickass:

Well I'm sure you get more than two bands per year, right? :p

But yeah, damn, Slayer, Megadeth, and my favourite, Testament! In one night! It's like the Priest, Testament, Mötorhead, Heaven and Hell tour of last year.

:lol::lol: i thought it was something else..... next time just say the damn thing without any ambiguous abbreviations, it's not like mr.V will kick you out of here for using words like fuck one time too many :p:p

Well I didn't write with the intention to offend, so that's why I didn't write it completely, If I had written 'mother fuckers' you might have felt offended, and I didn't want to do so :) .

I know Mr V won't kick me out  .

Damn skippy I'm ungrateful!

Seriously though - I know that they're awesome bands. And I probably won't see a lineup like that again. However, $40 + fees, etc is still a lot of dough, and I don't like them *that much* to shell out for it. If it was a band I adored, like Rush, I'd be there in a heartbeat. If it was $20 or $25, I'd be there in a heartbeat. But, once a concert hits the $30 mark, the cost-to-pleasure ratio gets skewed, and it has to be an *event* for me to shell out that dough. Despite the awesomeness of Slayer, it's not an event. (I may still go, however, but so far I'm not planning on it.)

Plus. I'm working full time, and I'll be taking a night class. And I'm doing drawing and painting for fun/to keep sane. I won't have time to go!

:p, but if if you think about it it's about $15 per band, which is an excellent price.

Awesome:

Just got back from an illegal metal concert that eventually got shut down by the cops.

The scene: It's held on the roof of a building just north of downtown Seattle (in the Belltown neighborhood, for the locals here), behind a park where people come to exercise their dogs off-leash. In order to get up there, you have to go into an alley, then walk up one flight up a rickety staircase. Then, stand on a bumpy roof.

Highlights: Admission - free! I saw a couple of good local bands, and about 5829 horrid ones. The host of the party was incredibly friendly, and has a great apartment - he also played his noise set in his living room while Bladerunner ran in the background. I also met some awesome people - one is a female noise musician and we had a great conversation about Oracle vs. SQL in regards to Database Administration. Another was getting a degree in Engineering after working for years in the aerospace industry, and the third was an artist. Maybe 30-40 people total showed up throughout the night, and the vibe was friendly and mellow. The coffeeshop across the street was also appreciated, as I was freezing my butt off later in the evening - one tea fixed that issue. Also, there is a subversive and immature thrill in blasting a yuppie neighborhood with raw black metal and noise.

Lowlights: Cold! No real place to sit! A couple people who lacked either hygiene and/or social skills insisted on talking to me despite me not being able to hear then because of, you know, the SHRIEKING BLACK METAL going on at the same time, that I'm actually interested in seeing. The police - however, they were extremely nice in regards to shutting us down, and we were all frankly surprised that it lasted as long as it did, which was 5 hours. (I was only there for 3 hours or so.) Then I spent the evening defrosting and eating sushi.

Seattle Moment of the Night: Some blond guy with dreads drinking both a beer AND a latte.

I have photos; I may post them later.

I think this beats Megadeth and Slayer :headbang:

The highlight for this year was with my all time favorite band Opeth at the Artmania Festival in a beautiful medieval town called Sibiu in Transylvania. The setlist was:
Heir Apparent
Ghost Of Perdition
The Leper Affinity
Closure with a nice jam in the middle
Godhead`s Lament
The Lotus Eater
Deliverance
Demon Of The Fall

It was a fantastic concert. After the gig I even had the chance to talk with the almighty bassplayer Martin Mendez. I got an autography from him and I took some pictures with him. Best show far this year.
Also at this festival I saw Amorphis for the second time in 2006 with the new singer Tomi.
And for the next show if everything goes good I`ll see Bobby McFerrin I know it`s not metal but I also like jazz music.

Hail

omg i'm soooooooooooooooo jealous!! still haven't managed to see them live, and that's while they practically live in the tourbus... i've missed them twice or thrice this year, all because of outrageous ticket prices, and the last time it was affordable it was sold out before i knew it...:cry: now keeping my fingers crossed for the next year, which promises to be just fantastic anyway!

Hey Elvina, check out Opeth website for some really interesting and special shows in 2010. I love to go but there are to far away from my home. May be you`ll catch some of the shows. Good luck :)

thnx for the tip!!
i've read about this in Mikael's blog and i thought so: nothing would come even close to my place... also, when i read this
The venues include the famed and prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as the luxurious Lichtburg in Essen, the oldest fully seated cinema in Germany.

The band will offer exclusive VIP ticket packages to all shows which include a laminated VIP pass exclusive to each show, access to sound check, a meet ‘n greet with Opeth, a t-shirt exclusive to that particular show, a signed tour programme and a special edition CD/DVD of Blackwater Park, with a 5.1 mix and a 30-minute, never-before-seen documentary all nicely packaged in a hard cover digipack designed by artist Travis Smith. The special edition will be released in March 2010 through Sony Music. All the Opeth loot will be included in an Opeth rucksack. The VIP laminate will also allow early access to venues without seat allocation so that VIP’s can get the best seats in the house.
i'm starting to doubt they will ever give a nice normal metal show for a decent price anymore...

edit: i've just checked where Essen is, seems to be not so far actually as i thought... if i had a car i would definitely go, but i don't... if i manage to quickly find some people with a car to travel along with, maybe there is a small chance i can be at the Essen show...

Now THIS seems really nice! The Lichtburg is great for shows like that! Been there several times before!

Sw we might see us there, Elvina?!
