Looks pretty nice, but I can't for the life of me understand why they'd enable DTS encoding, but not provide input/output for either S-Video (now archaic) or more importantly, component video. Makes no sense. If that receiver doesn't have digital optical or coaxial inputs, it's just not going to be that satisfactory to you in a few years. It might not be possible at that price range though, I don't know.

do not i repeat DO NOT purchase a "home theater in a box". the receivers are generally fine but they can offer the kit at such a relatively low price because they put the worlds shittiest speakers in along with it. two years after suffering with my kenwood i had to get some big 3-ways. the 6 surrounders that came with the kit now take up space in my closet.
secondly, for whatever reason, music sounds like SHIT on a surround system 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 whatever, it doesnt matter. stereo only for music please.
bottom line: buy the most powerful amp and two most expensive speakers you can possibly afford. you DO NOT NEED A SUB.
good luck with your purchase

good for you andrew. not from my experience though. i think it has something to with music being recorded in stereo, not surround. i dont know much about it. just never sounded good to me.

yeah, you end up with shite coming out the satellites. You don't notice it as much (at least I don't) at higher volumes, but i do at lower ones. Or maybe it's because I'm running it through my computer and it might work differently. I don't really know.

yeah, I know I don't need a sub at all. Fuck this ".1" bullshit.

The speakers are what's holding me back from the "home theatre in a box" shit. The included stuff looks so puny, and then they include this huge sub which I wouldn't even hook up at all... ...and I agree, for music, all I really need is two speakers.

i was a sub non believer until i used one ... for movies ... well there is no substitute.

and for music, if you have small speakers ... you need a sub.

my rig is.

DENON 5.1 receiver (some 4 years old rig)
ENERGY Take 5 sub/sat system.

I agree on home theater in a box systems ... and if the one I recommended was around $400 (where it should be) ... I would say, stay away ... but for $150 ... fuck me

you rule mr moose. you can buy the components seperatlely. just get a receiver and two speakers. dont matter which company. as long as theyre expensive as fuck. ie you get what you pay for

as long as theyre expensive as fuck. ie you get what you pay for

hahah .. this is actually kind of true in audio ...

rule of thumb is ... if you will go the separates route ... put most of the money into the speakers.

A sub would ruin most of M00se's music, since it's all blackmetal. and would you want like... grim frostbitten sounding speakers for black metal?

second what lurch said
although i think "you get what you pay for" applies to almost everything within reason. ie: a bentley is going to fall apart much quicker and more often than a camry. you gotta use judgement
