lurch's deal thread ...

do not i repeat DO NOT purchase a "home theater in a box". the receivers are generally fine but they can offer the kit at such a relatively low price because they put the worlds shittiest speakers in along with it. two years after suffering with my kenwood i had to get some big 3-ways. the 6 surrounders that came with the kit now take up space in my closet.
secondly, for whatever reason, music sounds like SHIT on a surround system 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 whatever, it doesnt matter. stereo only for music please.
bottom line: buy the most powerful amp and two most expensive speakers you can possibly afford. you DO NOT NEED A SUB.
good luck with your purchase

1) Music sounds fucking incredible on my system; I have Polk Audio speakers in a 5.1 set-up.
2) You absolutely need a subwoofer! I mean, even if you're ONLY going to listen to music, it's the only way to reproduce the low-end effectively. The little bass response that the other speakers have just doesn't cut it. And if you're going to watch movies, etc., WTF is the point w/o the subwoofer?

Maybe music sounds like shit on your surround system BECAUSE you don't have a subwoofer.

again ... you'd be surprised how different most of your music sounds on a good system ... just imagine the new Akercocke just fucking barreling through on a subwoofer ... :kickass:

A sub would ruin most of M00se's music, since it's all blackmetal. and would you want like... grim frostbitten sounding speakers for black metal?
yeah moose, you need some old paper cone speakers lifted out of a car you find in the woods. just place them on a shelf - no box needed. wire them in reverse polarity with unsheathed copper and definitely dont solder them.

Again, I listen to shit-tons of black metal, through my 5.1 set-up, and it sounds fucking glorious. If your receiver is even moderately decent, you can adjust each "channel" to suit your needs, i.e. turn down the sub/bass if you so desire.

incorrect on the subwoofer friends. thats simply not accurate bass-reproduction. are you guys listening to hip-hop or something?
im sure adrian would agree here. we bass players would be using subwoofers as amps then. if he disagrees then fuck him hahaha

invest money in good speakers ... if I had the money right now ... I would spend as much as $1000-$1500 on a pair of good speakers ...

#1 ... good speakers are good no matter what other technology comes out to reproduce music ... you can literally use them for decades.

i really have my eyes on a pair of these:

true and i agree completely. however, its not all that fun to sit there and fuck with the knobs when the damn thing was recorded in stereo in the first place. i want tRo0 sound. maybe i ll get some monitor speakers hahaha

What fuck with the knobs?

I press a button or 2 on the remote, and voila! Instant surround sound to my liking.

ok ... for all the subwoofer non-believers.

they serve numerous purposes:

- if paired with smaller speakers, they do all the bass duties, leaving the satellites to handle the higher frequencies more effectivelly ... basically providing for clearer sound

- low frequencies require the most power output from a receiver/amplifier ... so again, a powered subwoofer, which usues it's own internal amp, takes the load off the receiver, which in turn runs cleaner and provides less effortless power to the speaker.

- there are certain low frequnecies that only very high end and LARGE speakers can reproduce ... the sub is your friend if you want high end and have no space/money

Very well said, my friend.

I can't understand those who don't like the subwoofer. Are we talking about JUST for music purposes, or for movies as well? Because that's apples & oranges.

well ... your bass amp is technically a subwoofer ... large 12-16" drivers with low freuency adjustments ...

Just cause you use a subwoofer doesn't mean you crank that beast up like wiggers in their lowered honda civic with spinners. You use it to supliment the bass coming from the speakers.

If you had it at wigger/my pals volume you'd hear "WHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMP *cymbals* WHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMPWHUMP*

daddy lurch's optimum subwoofer placment trick ...

hook up the sub and place it in the spot where you would be sitting doing most of your music listening / movie watching.

walk around the room and listen ... the spot where the sub sounds like it blends into the mix the best ... well .. that's where you should place it.

a properly adjusted sub, should not call attention to itself ..
