I can't really see what use 5.1 is for music, someone please explain

Unless the album is actually mixed with 5+1 separate channels, I don't believe there's any specific purpose, other than to have complete surround sound in your listening environment (which is how I listen to most of my music).

That's my point, and do you really WANT a surround effect or feel or whatever when it's mixed and supposed to be played in stereo? What's the output in each speaker, especially the front/middle/(woofer?)?

First part: yes, I love the sound of sitting in the "middle" of all the music, coming at me, coming from behind me, etc. I'm not bragging, but I have really, really good speakers, and the shit sounds dope, k?

Second part: I'm not sure I understand...output per speaker? Do you mean watts per channel?

No, I mean what output channel or whatever to call it... As in I suppose the side speakers get their respective stereo (L/R) output, but what's in the middle?
As to wanting to be in the middle as opposed to.. well, slightly in front of(?) the source, well, I guess that's just a matter of taste.

i think maybe they will force me to do surround mixing later in school so maybe i can do something kickass i dunno probably not

see the thing is unless humanity develops 5 ears and one sub-ear real soon now, 5.1 can suck it

well I can hear if something is in front of or behind me even with two ears, can you? I eagerly await the eirikr skogr promenadr musikr fastr sittr hemmr medr surroundr ir kolsvartrmyrkr demo I

that's all well and good unless

1) you want to be able to MOVE while listening - 5.1 requires one to sit fuckin still or all the directional hearing gets FUKKED

2) you want to be able to use headphones and hear the music as intended

3) you DO NOT enjoy gleefully munching on penis

edit: GOD DAMN

Obviously in my grand vision this is a very good listen sitting in the dark all alone listening to something so kickass you don't want to move because it's so kickass and all of that.. plus the source doesn't move just because I do, only my perception of it so it would still feel like something is in this or that direction bla bla rargh, I haven't though a whole load about it but I'm convinced that it could kick ass.

Well that's just it. You don't LOSE what's in front of you, and now it's replicated to the sides & behind you as well. It's not "split" into 5 different speakers, rather the stereo signal is still only split L-R, just through 5 speakers instead of 2. Rather simple really.

Both are entirely true. Keep in mind my 5.1 set-up is predominantly for movie-watching, since those are specifically mixed in 5.1 (sometimes 6.1 now) sound to duplicate the movie theater experience.

And I often do just plug my headphone jack in so I can take advantage of a more "focused" listening enviro.
