lurch's deal thread ...

Obviously in my grand vision this is a very good listen sitting in the dark all alone listening to something so kickass you don't want to move because it's so kickass and all of that.. plus the source doesn't move just because I do, only my perception of it so it would still feel like something is in this or that direction bla bla rargh, I haven't though a whole load about it but I'm convinced that it could kick ass.
Yeah but I've read fuckloads of theory about when directional hearing works and when it doesn't and let me assure you that with 6 speakers it's VERY EASY to make it sound totally imbalanced unless you have a proper listening position

untrue: The Doors have a DVD thingy for Riders on the Storm (its the one that works best) that is just totally unruly on a 5.1 system.

I think he meant no music album has ever been mixed for 5.1, and uh, kickass. Or something.

Obviously most new/fairly new DVDs are in 5.1

Exactly, which is why it's quite important to measure very specifically the placement of the speakers in relation to the "sweet" spot.

there are hundreds, maybe thousands of classical music audio CD's mastered in 5.1 ... audiophiles that listen to this stuff ... do actually have a music chair and listen to this sitting still for hours ... wackos, I know

there are also some receivers, like my Denon, that has a "5 channel stereo" mode ... which is not surround ... but rather splits th 2 channels into 5 ... basically fucking up everything , but also bathing my room with insane amounts of noise.

i completely agree with eveything erik said in this thread. its a wierd feeling.

That's pretty much what I mean, I'd like to try it, and I'd really like to try it with something with feelings similar to.. say, burzum, but made with surround in mind and utterly kickass

@gugster
haha, then apparently the *people who engineered the system* dont either, because they wrote the fucking instruction manual. it doesnt say, "place speakers above and about one foot behind listeners head" just to satisfy some legal requirements.
5.1 surround sound is - by definition - a system that requires the listener to palce oneself in a certain position related to the speakers. LOL if you sit there like that and listen to music.....................that wasnt recorded in a 5.1 format in the first place.
what youre doing is just hooking up a bunch of speakers to one amp. its not surround sound.

unless its a movie.

hey, seriously, have you ever had chocolate covered espresso beans? they rule.
