lurch's deal thread ...

Ok, you fags. I'm getting a stereo tube amplifier built, probably 3w max. Name good speakers to buy for it. 90 dB MINIMUM.

tube amp ... that's going to be a tough match ... you need something high end for sure.

Well, the tuber is going to be $500 minimum, I'm having it fully custom. The builder had some old 70s throwbacks playing though, and it was beautiful, so I was hoping for something that can be powered on low wattage. A pain to find those.

The problem with high end is they need a lot of driving power. While tube amps blow away as it is with a good speaker, too much nominal wattage and they'll (the speakers) peter out.

Well, anything less and it's gaysex. It seems all the ones I've seen run at 88dB sensitivity. What do YOU suggest?

I would highly recommend the Klipsch speakers then ... the whole range they have is very sensitive and can be driven with low power .. they tend to be a bit bright ... but actually with the warmth the tubes put out ... it might be a perfect match and would tame them.

somethng like this ...

95db !!!

or these ..

92db ... but the frequency response is no that great on the low end

I have the promedias (2.1) at Moose's insistence, so I'm already open to that. I do believe these will do. :kickass:

don't hold me to this ... but if I remember correctly, for every 3db increase in speaker sensitivity, you can achieve the same volume/loudness from an amp that is half as powerful ... or some shit like that

so ... like
a 100w amp on 89db speakers = 50w amp on 92db ones

Cool, brand?

Oops, sorry. BIC America

http://www.bicamerica.com/

I bought them about 1.5 years ago and they are an AMAZING value. The lows are pretty good and VERY tight but the highs are outstanding...crystal clear too. I did a shitload of research on bookshelves before buying and these are the ones I concluded on based on reviews, etc. Sugg. price is $275/pair but I think I got them on special for $120, which is pretty spectacular imo. You can get good prices off th net. Also, you can get the crossovers mod'ed and really have the fuckers outperform $1000 speakers, so "they" say. I'm not a savant on the tech junk though.

Here are some reviews:

well but i misunderstood the whole deal

anyway i'm sure you know but a 100W amp isn't twice as loud as a 50W amp, a 1000W amp is

"powerful" was a bit vague maybe you didn't actually mean perceived loudness

not sure about that either ... BUT ... I know you have to "double" amp wattage to hear an audible difference ...

so like a 50w amp and 75w one ... pretty much same thing
