Mago de Oz is coming!

The fact is, they are loved by Spanish speaking people. And Mexican music fans are crazy rabid for bands they love. The crowd for Brujeria at Maryland Deathfest was fucking crazy! It would bring a ton of Hispanic people to ProgPower just to see them. But if they are tough to deal with, I understand the hesitation to book them.

I wonder what other bands have a similar reputation?

I guess it will me my first experience at the Filmore, since I must see these guys.

The Filmore in Silver Spring is really nice. I saw Meshuggah there about a year ago. Its a big venue with 2 levels, much like the way Rams Head in Baltimore or the 9:30 Club are set up. The sound was great and the stage was visibile from pretty much everywhere in the venue.

when I saw Rata Blanca in Chicago they played a HUGE place that usually holds I think around 2,000 to 3,000 people. The place was packed. it was a mix of country, hard rock, death metal, and power metal and indie rock. All hispanic bands none who sang in english. The place was filled with all ages from 5 year olds to 60 year olds. Everyone was having a fun time. There was 3 circle pits of just families all dancing in a circle and hacing fun with thier kids. They played Mago De Oz over the PA between bands and EVERYONE was going nuts. It was a really cool experience.

No. However, they have a "reputation" that I would not want to deal with in person. One example is from a former poster who resides in Mexico who posted this in a previous discussion about the band on this forum:

Also, there was a very disgusting incident: After the Show, Mago de Oz destroyed the room in backstage and the hotel's room too (was displayed in local newspapers the morning after).... the reason? they wanted to play 15 minutes more, altering the schedule, the promotor said no, because could not alter the original schedule and the band exploded in rage

Never mind that their guarantee is near ridiculous. Last time they were going to play in NYC before their tour got cancelled, they were asking for $60 a pop.

Well that was a hell of a night. Setting aside the $20 parking (and no nearby lots or street parking), zero merch and only selling Heineken, my main gripe was that the ticket and venue's website said "doors at 6, show at 8" and listed no openers. Curtains go up at 9:30 for...some lousy opener.

Anyway, Mago de Oz was amazing, and while the stage really wasn't big enough for the kind of show I was hoping for, it was still incredible to see. This is a hugely entertaining band. The crowd reaction was also incredible. I'm bad at guessing numbers, but it looked like at least 400 people there. As soon as the band started playing, what seemed like everyone's drinks started flying into the air. Then the weird dance/mosh pit kicked in and everyone started slipping on said drinks. Nobody cared. It was all smiles, even after taking an elbow to the face or getting beer in their hair.

So yeah, if you can see this band, do not pass it by. Just stand way back if you don't want to mix it up.
