EXACTLY what I was going for. I wanted to use some ugly chords with my C7 Hellraiser and I wanted everything to be crystal-clear. I don't think I used a Tubescreamer with those recordings, the JMP1 can be REALLY gainy if you're not careful. I just went Guitar -> JMP1 -> Master Out into my Firestudio, added impulses/EQ. The Master Out sounds the exact same as if you plugged straight in, loaded up Nick Crow's 7170, and didn't add an impulse. Except.. well, better.
The secret: Change the tubes out. There's only two 12AX7s, but they make a big difference. Those recordings were all done with Groove Tubes 12AX7Cs in both slots. Since then, I've experimented with two GT 12AX7R2s, one 12AX7R2 and a Tung Sol, a 12AX7B, some stock Mesa tubes, Mullards, etc. They will all round your tone out in various directions. The Cs have been the least gainy while still being hotter than balls.
I've got an X-Amp. Give me some DI guitar and ask for some settings and I'll give it to you. These are your options:
-Tubescreamer's Secret, Ibanez TS9 pedal, or nothing
-4 channels: Clean 1, Clean 2, OD1, or OD2
-Gain 0 to 20
-Bass -6 to 6
-Mid -6 to 6
-Treble -6 to 6
-Presence -6 to 6
-Bass shift on or off
-Impulse, Nebula, or nothing
Hook it up with links to some DIs and gimme some settings, and I'll hook it up with some samples.
