Guitar preamps

I really dig my Digitech 2101, effects are ok, and you can get some really good hi-gain sounds out of it with great definition, I owned a Marshall JMP-1, ADA MP1-3TM, Kitty Hawk Quattro (great for fusion leads or Santana style sounds, not that great for metal, only for old school stuff imho) and a POD (and the POD Xt of a friend is laying around here) and a Behringer Bass V-Amp.
Through my Engl Poweramp and my old Poweramp (Rocktron Velocity 150) the Digitech sounded the best for metal, and for real clean sounds and you have good effects (from nice reverb over phaser to whammy and harmonizers) and it's really cheap. The Marshall was ok but not my cup of tea, same for the ADA and with the Noise Gate in the Digitech it's so quiet you won't believe, no feedback (only one sound and this is programmed in that way because I wanted some Hendrix style sound with the ability of getting feedbacks and so on).
For me it's one of the best preamps ever because it's really versatile and you can get great sounds out of it if you know how to use it (you have to use the 10 or better 15 band graphic eq and parametric eq to get great results and not only acceptable ones and with good tubes in it you can get almost everything from SRV to Cannibal Corpse, Jack Owen played one of those, too I think).

the triaxis is great because of all the different channels and tonal varieties you can get..clean sounds are still my favourite out of any amp i've tried. it's a little overpriced brand new but if you find a used one for a decent price jump on it.

ooo, i remember now

how do ya like it? i still kinda miss that guitar

i bought a chameleon purple 550 a while back, but i didn't like it as much

loving it..it's my main floating bridge guitar (probably cause i cant bring myself to play my RG2820) haha funnily enough i used to own a chameleon purple 550 as well, sold it off. great to have a guitar with an original edge again.

You know, I totally forgot about this thread. I use to own an ADA MP-1, into a Peavey Classic 60/60 power amp. I had two of them actually, one was stock, and the other had the 666 mod (basically a Mesa Recto type of tone. Both of them were really great preamps, I absolutely loved the tone. I would use the modded one for rhythms and the stock one for leads. Always got compliments after shows. The stock MP-1 is very versatile and a good cutting lead tone. The rhythm sounds (to me) leave something to be desired. But the 666 mod really helped that out. I never tried the 3 tube mod but ya know...due to this thread bringing back memories of that cool preamp make me want to get another one. I might have to do that.

I only got rid of my MP-1/Peavey 60/60 rig to get a 5150 btw. The 5150 was good for both rhythm and lead and sounded killer for either use :)

The MOD4MKII is also a great mod... I prefer it over the 3.666. In fact out of the 4 modded units I had (3TM, MOD4MKII, 3.666 & SS MOD) i only kept the 3TM. The SS & 3.666 are the 1st units I sold. They sounded good but was lacking a little something. The MOD4MKII gave me an early Pantera, Testament kinda tone (sold it last week) while the 3TM's Tube Dist channel as over the wall gain (think newer Exodus). The only problem with the 3TM is that you kinda lose the Clean Tube channel for "Brown" channel... very acdc'ish, zz top'ish etc.. and thats fine by me because I use the solid state channel for my cleans since the OD2 on the SS channel becomes a compressor... my 3TM is an Ultra + modded unit, has a few more extra's to it than a standard 3TM.

For the price these units are going for you should seriously grab another one and if you've got any soldering skills (I dont) order in the 3TM board with the MDRT mod (new tranny). it Fucking kills! :kickass:

Joe

By the way, heres a small clip I did testing my ISP unit for some friends... it will give you a small idea of what the 3TM sounds like... but you need to realise that it was recorded with a shitty cam so image and sound quality isnt at its best !!

Rig is:

ADA 3TM > ISP Decimator > Rocktron Xpression > Behringer parametric eq (ada's fx loop) > VHT 2502 > VHT 4x12 FatBottom

Speaking of expensive preamps, by the way, can anyone explain to me how the Engl MIDI tube preamp can possibly cost $2800!?!?!?!!?!? I mean jesus fucking christ is that a lot of money, and what could it offer that would make it cost $1000 more than the preamp from their FLAGSHIP AMP (Special Edition)?

I believe such price comes from midi-control, because of the way they went to achieve true tone and get interface only possible with motorized knobs.
So it the price of full midi control.

Well tons of preamps are MIDI controllable in terms of switching, but you're saying EVERYTHING on this one is? (motorized knobs? jeebus...)

i never fail to fall in love with those old RG's when i play them! but within a few months i always realize they're just not for me

here fairly soon i wanna get a nice used rg7620 and stick with it, IMO they're the best reasonably priced 7 string on the market...and offer a lot of what i love about the older RG's

No, no it does not have motorized knobs - it has something like Behringer V-Amp has (leds around knobs). But main advantage - it does not have op-amp (it use optronic devices or something similar - I`m not specialist in electronics).
Better to check ENGL site for additional information.
