Maryland Deathfest, 2010 edition. You need to check this out.

Well, at least extreme metal fans are a friendly and cordial lot, as evidenced by this thread. (No this statement was not necessary either, but it made ME laugh).

Regardless, if you can't laugh at that poster, then you just don't have a sense of humor.

Serious question here: Is it essential to not be able to read the band name? Is the band more extreme if their logo is more indecipherable? I'm really not making fun now, but absolutely curious. I've always wondered.

I think the harsher the logo, the more brutal the music. I am going to test this theory by creating a band called pixiefairydust but it is going to be the most brutal logo ever, upside down crosses, crucified babies, goat blood, neal patrick harris, etc.... We will see if it works....

Key word here is "I Think". You think, it was more important. So we'll put you in the "Bolt Thrower fan" category. I'm sure many Fates fans would strongly disagree.

Dude has a point. Fates Warning, though being inactive for many years as of late, have still been doing more than Bolt Thrower over here. I would definitely say that BT's performance in the US last year was as important as Blind Guardian's performance at Prog Power 3.

I was reading somewhere that there is this guy out in Europe who designs lots of these logo's for bands. I guess he makes a good living out of it too. I guess it is a big deal when you can get his work. Kind of odd. I guess he is like Pusshead for Black Metal / Noise / Death metal.

what ever happened to Pusshead? Septic Death was incredible. The Kichiga (bad spelling?) Ep was one of my favorites growing up.

Amusing that every time this festival is brought up here, at least a few people make a comment about 'I can't read their names!'

there are band names on that flier?

I'll have to check out some of these bands and see if I can listen outside my box a bit more...which I have been doing lately.

Pestilence is really good. Naglfar is great....the newer stuff isnt as good as the earlier stuff.

I was into the Capitalist Casualties in like 93. I didnt even know they were still around. I taped one of thier shows and interviewed them. Really nice guys. I have put them on one of my video fanzines I used to do.

The Chasm are really worth checking out too. They just put out a new disc too.

I own all of the Fates Warning CDs and only 2 Bolt Thrower CDs. I guess that would put me in the "Bolt Thrower fan" category. :Smug:

To get back on the thread topic, I am looking forward to seeing Necrophobic, Melechesh, & Portal amongst others for the first time. I am also really looking forward to seeing Asphyx again. Hopefully they will get a full set this time.

Pushead is still doing artwork and such. I actually semi-met him last summer. Seems like a chill dude.

The guy you are referring to, who I think is Romanian and doesn't really care for metal but has done logos for Emperor and tons of other well-known extreme metal bands has a very distinct style. I don't think a single one of the logos on that MDF flyer are his!

Another fest in the States that I think has it right in trying to do something unique is the ALEHORN fest in Chicago.
Some great bands have been brought through there.

I immediately thought of Alehorn after I posted my wall o' text. Any fest that supports tr00 traditional heavy metal is awesome in my book.:kickass:

The issue with Alehorn is that they do zero promotion for it. Look who we have had play there already....

Manilla Road
Slough Feg
Cresant Shield
November's Doom
Winterhawk
Twisted Tower Dire
Hammers of Misfourtune
Argus
Ludicra
Bible of the Devil
Pharoh
Icarus Witch
Superchrist

and a few others in the past 4 years.....this is as close to the Keep It True Festival and maybe like 60 to 80 people show up each year. This year since it was free was the most crowded its been. They really need to start spreading the word about this fest. It is always a great time.

Well, Chicago is a bit too far for me to go, regardless of how awesome the shows are...only been once and that was for the one Powerfest I went to. Pretty expensive trip. However, I do agree that it is atrocious that Alehorn can't get crowd support, because some of those bands are absolutely amazing. I sure hope it's not because enough people don't know about those bands...they should; especially in a city as big as Chi-town.

I see the maturity of some people here is amazing. I see you have nothing to add to this thread...what a surprise.

I prolly fall under that category too. I'm just messin' with ya. Everyone on the PP board knows I love them regardless of their musical preferences!

It was a response to my comment that was spillover from our ...er.. debate in the Folk Metal thread, nothing to do with my musical tastes. ;)

I know. It's the only fest that might give a true traditional metal band a chance, which is why I attend when I can and always speak of the fest each year on multiple forums. They truly book bands that otherwise would not play the area or get exposure.

You forgot Gates of Slumber! I know you are not a fan, but you can not deny their importance in the current true doom / metal movement, as they consistently get invited to Keep It True, Hammer of Doom, etc, etc. Alehorn was my first exposure to them, and they have been on an upward climb in status ever since that era of their career.

Yes. It's a long-running scene thing, dating back to at least the early '90s, and quite possibly earlier.
