Masking a really sheddy vocal

Unless they pay you extra just to pitch fix the vocals, i wouldn't touch it. just make the rest of the mix sound badass to emphasize how terrible the vocals are.

one effect that may mask the out of tune notes a bit would be a chorus effect.

Tried that, and he requested no fx on vocals, so thats the way its going, no pitch correcting, nothing.

And the rest of the mix does sound fairly badass - the vocals do sound pretty out of place. Really thin, out of tune and in the middle of what is actually a pretty beefy mix.

the guy already has enough problems holding a note, you want to throw varying pitches on top of that? :D

Chorus can help with fattening up a thin voice but someone as pitchy as this dude, it might only compound the problem

besides, it doesn't really help Owen in the long run to have something sub-par with his name on it, even if some things are a bit out of his control. He should make all of it sound the best he can ... however, I do agree with you that it may require a fee increase due to the added strain of trying to turn chicken shit into chicken salad :)

Here's basically the mix so far.

Total patch up job this one, the drums were recorded with 4 mics (kick, snare, two OH's) on really old skins so most of the kit has been sample replaced to fuckery, bar the hi-hat and cymbals which I'm not liking too much anyway.

Guitars were Peavey Bandit 112 through a 57. Ugh, is all I can say.

Bass was a DI so I guess that was alright.

And the of course, yeah, the vocals...

Edit: and no it wasnt tracked to a click so theres no way I'm getting down and dirty with all the sloppy timing issues that are in there

my god

somehow his voice sounds WORSE with the music added :D I thought maybe some of the bad shit would get masked but ... damn

what did you try doing (if anything) with his vox?

Bit of reverb, touch delay.

I had tried to mask it all by pulling out the "ozzifier" in Reaper, but that just sounded too effectsy for him, I couldn't really get any distorted tones sitting right either. Without broadcasting to the world even more that "this is a shit vocal", but yeah, you should have heard the mix before I got anywhere near it. Haha, I could post a clip without any of the touchups on it, that would sound disasterous :p

no no no ... I'll take your word for it :D

how many other songs do you need to suffer through?

Wise choice.

None at the moment, this was basically a draft mix to see who got the job, a few mates of mine wanted to track this and I had to salvage as much as possible at that stage as well - it could have been so much worse that I wouldn't have touched it at all (basically they've been at this a year and don't know any amp micing techniques - crazy), but they're doing a mixing job as well, they'll probably do a good few more tracks for free like cos this was a band they found in the college (we're all meant to be learning sound production at, having said that I've learnt four million times as much from this forum) and need the experience (much much more than I do, they've been taught practically nothing and have no inherent interest in what they're meant to be learning outside an 'educational' facility, that, for all intensive purposes is inherently useless).

So yeah, dire predicament all round, but I might be able to salvage a few coppers out of it for buying some new gear for myself. :p

OOOOffttt!!!! I think they only thing that might save this guy is a bullet.
You could maybe try doubling his take, pitch it down an octave and blend it in subtly just to fatten it up a bit. I tried this with some stuff I'm working on just now and it filled out the vocal a fair bit.

It may just compound this guys pretty sketchy pitching though.
Does he have a side shed?

Dude, fixing that shit is easy as fuck.
MUTE BUTTON.
Done.

Then get one of those hard drive sweeper programs to permenently clean that shit off your hard drive so it doesn't contaminate anything else. I know it's digital so there shouldn't be any bleed, but one can never be too careful.

Man this is BAD!!!!!oh shit
I dont think you can save this with any autotune->rerecord it or much funnier put a HC autotune on it to have this "wonderfull" effect:
