Mastodon "The Hunter"

Mike Elizondo mixed it. Better known for Hip Hop stuff but seems he's done a pretty nice job here.

This goes to say that those producers/engineers (that mainly work with hip-hop, modern RNB, etc) have got their shit down as opposed to the average "metal only" engineer.

This album sounds amazing so far, even through youtube. I'm a complete sucker for organic stuff like this, it makes something inside me tinkle, I've come to stray afar from the typical "ULTRA CONSTANT POUNDING" drums etc, not that I don't like those, I do, a lot of music asks for it, but it gets old fast, really fast.

I really haven't enjoyed what I've heard so far but I've not heard anyone that has listened to it in full give a bad review... I might actually give it a go.

Just ordered the Special Edition, woo!

I like this album, but I do prefer Crack The Skye. I think this one is just more of a grower than that one was, for me.

I absolutely love Crack the Skye, I think it's one of the most important metal/rock albums of the decade, but then again, I think these two are totally different styles of albums. Can't really compare them to each other, but I do love both :)

one of the reasons for metallica's success, IMO, is lars drum parts.
it's very simple mostly, HH+BD+SNR, but he keeps the song's groove at ALL time and never let the song lose it's energy.
hence why he NEVER plays the ride cymbal and doesn't even have one in his kit IMHO.

wrong thread?

Sounds absolutely incredible. Once again Mastodon produce the goods. They really are the most important heavy band in the world in my opinion. Metal is getting more and more stale but they're so out there and so fresh. As a huge Mastodon fan I had to approach this album with an open mind or I'll turn into one of those Opeth fans who are all so "uurgghhhh it isn't Blackwater Park - can't listen". I think there was a lot of pressure to write something good after Crack The Skye and another concept album might have been too much..?

Great mix too. +1 to the thing about metal producers, which why I don't produce much metal at all - there really isn't much scope to be creative and do something cool. Mastodon on the other hand have no boundaries!

oh yeah kind of drifted there...

anyway just saying simple drum parts often sounds much better than rapidly playing 16/1 BD + 1/4 SNR + 1/4 cymbal for entire songs

It does, of course, totally rely on the context. Listen to Remission, Leviathan and Blood Mountain. Sometimes simple drums rule, sometimes insane drums rule.

It's weird, I've never been able to get into these guys. Always sounds like just a wall of noise. I can listen to stuff like Meshuggah any day, but not Mastodon. Not sure what it is. I hear all these great things about these guys but still just don't get it. Oh well.
