Is the outside casing just a casing, or is it actually the capsule itself? Reason I ask is because I just purchased 4 of them, all of which have cracked plastic on the outside.... That shouldn't affect the sound, correct? Looks like a few missed hits from drum sticks. The seller swears they don't sound any different but I just wanted to make sure. I couldn't pass up 4 MD421's for $300...

I hope so... Take a look at them here. I'm not worried too much about the dented baskets, every studio I've been in with 421's on a drum kit had them dented.
One of them is a 421 MK2, the rest are old style.... I may sell one after I get a chance to test them all.
Jaysus Chroist what a deal - I'm sure those things are built to take a lot of abuse, so I think you can count on the internals still being pristine! I've gotta lurk on ebay more often (or on second thought, maybe not, cuz deal or no deal, it's still money I can't afford to spend 
)
