I used to be deeply in love with power metal, especially bands like Edguy, Helloween, Hammerfall (always been a huge fan of HF) and Nocturnal Rites. Eventually it got tiring, and then I got into Opeth again. Which lead to Amon Amarth. I've been a fan of Amon Amarth for a few years, the vocals and melodic sound really captures my attention. Eventually I started listening to In Flames' old stuff (from -96 and forth). Then insomnium (another melodic death metal band).

I tried "regular" death metal and found it wasn't my cup of tea, lyrics often play a big role for me. Then I realized that melodic death is just a heavier version of power metal. A much heavier version with growling.

Anyone else agree?

A good portion of melodic death metal is basically power metal with harsh vocals, but not all of it. See: a multitude of Slaughter of the Soul-loving bands. I don't know how lyrics factor into it for you though.
