Metal Bands that never sold out.

That's a pretty good list. A couple of them (FNM and perhaps Carcass, for example) released shit albums before quitting, but didn't sell out as such.

It'd probably be easier to list ones that did sell out, rather than those that didn't.

Faith No More?

That's a tough one to call. On the one hand they released a cover of 'easy' as a single, and i remember an interview where they asked the singer if that was a sell out, and he said "i certainly hope so". But on the other hand, they stayed pretty weird and eclectic and actually did a lot of stuff that probably risked alienating a lot of people even more.

But for the most part... that list is just silly. Most of the bands are so underground (or just plain crap) that the idea of them even being able to consider "selling out" is just laughable.

1. Faith No More. - I wouldn't really consider metal. Great band though
2. I have much more respect for bands that atleast try something different and stray from their original sound unlike bands who haved played the same song for years - (see Slayer, AC/DC)
3. What the fuck is the truckstop?
4. Iron Maiden might not have changed their sound to gain a following but they definitely sold out - ads for fucking Sony? give me a fucking break.

Yeah... I dunno, the whole "sold out" thing is such a contentious issue anyway. Just because a band changes style doesn't necessarily mean they sell out, and then again some bands do what they want to do but capitalise on it by using every available resource to promote themselves and they get accused of selling out too.

Banned frm LORD ***** LOL

LOL indeed! Must be terrible for you to live with such heartbreak every day that you need to have that as your user title!

Its hard to differentiate between a band selling out and changing their style; they critisize metallica for selling out but in the same breath say bands like carcass, slayer, immortal and iron maiden havent sold out, yet all of these bands have changed their style emmensly. If thats the case then metallica havent sold out either. Kill em all to reload is a massive change in style, but so is reek to swansong.

So songs from Show no mercy are the same as reign are the same a God hates us all are the same as Christ Illusion?

I was thinking this too, after I logged out last night. I mean, you've even got bands like Poison and Warrant who never actually sold out.

And as for Pantera..."Metal Magic" and "Power Metal", anyone?

You could call any band that signs with a major label to kick off their career as selling out. If they had any integrity then surely they would keep plying their trade in the pubs and such and try to make it on their own, without corporate sponsorship. Y'know.

I'm all for bands changing their sound for the better. I suppose it's just when they change it just to latch onto a trend and/or sell lots of records, rather than for musical reasons that I get peeved. There's no point in bands playing shitty pub gigs forever if they've got the potential to play big places (I know what I'd prefer), but it's a fairly fine line at times.

Surprised to see a few of the bands there, I didn't really think Demon Hunter have been around long enough to know if they sold out have they? I mean I have liked their albums for a few years, but have they been around that long?
