Metal Most Hate, and You DIG

On of this forum, which is its own world when it comes to views on metal, my take on some djent is a bit more favorable, particularly in the ambidjent strain. I've been known to spin stuff like this:

And I give Liturgy more of a chance than most people I know, discounting HHH's godawful press persona and lack of ability to write a cohesive album.

I love early Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy and it seems most metalheads hate "Beauty and the Beast" metal.

More often than not, they hate it because it's not "manly."

Not quite, valor = what one needs to not slink away from the majesty of the mighty riff.

Is that supposed to mean something? As though black metal doesn't have riffs? What the fuck are you even talking about? There is drone metal, which could actually be described as "riffless," but black metal certainly doesn't fit that description.

Sometimes nostalgia is a strong motivator for music I like. And aint that what it's all about? You can go back and forth all day about the instrumental stylings and creative nuances of a particular song, or lack of, but when it all boils down to it music is subjective and it's the feeling that really grabs ya.

Listening to Slipknot reminds me of being in 5th grade, and I don't really like that.

I mean real riffs, not wallpaper reverb-drenched telelellelelelelele riffs.

There's some Dark Ambient out there that is mislabeled as Black Metal.

I'm going with the for whatever reason, hated 3 Inches of Blood. I like a lot of heavy metal that's bordering on silly and they're no exception. I'm a sucker for traditional metal bands in which the vocalist occasionally wails like a girl too. (And I feel the need to say I DONT mean king diamond. He overdoes them. I can occasionally listen to don't break the oath or them, but he gives me a headache.)

Oh and The Sword too. Gods of the Earth and Warp Riders fucking rock.

What is a "real" riff? Do only the ones that go chuggachug and make you wanna fuck shit up in the mosh pit count?

It's not necessarily easily defined. To give one example, if you see someone talking about "textures" and "soundscapes" in the context of a black metal band, chances are you won't find many real riffs.

Eh riffs are overrated sometimes. The guitar is an instrument not a thing made just for riffing and solos. Metal is often plagued by a one dimensional view of the guitar in my opinion. Besides I don't know of any rules saying metal has to be riff dominant in the first place.

My point is more that whatever silly arbitrator of metalness decided that thrash riffs + metalcore breakdowns is somehow less metal than what passes as black metal today should be fired/usurped/lynched.

The Sword, their first album has an average review of 45% on enc. metallum but I liked it.

A lot of thrash bands that for whatever reason have been forgotten. The masses can't tolerate more than 4 or so thrash bands it seems.

Although "Metal Most Hate" could include all metal, since "Most" don't even like metal.

Yeah, The Sword is decent. No worse or any more derivative than Witchfinder General or any number of bands that were already playing retro-metal in the 80's.

Okay, I was actually going to say some songs from The Sword, I dig but this statement is really a bit much. The Sword is stoner doom, and Witchfinder is NWOBHM. It's really like saying Down and Pentagram are the same.
