Metal Preference Influenced by Location?

Kinda curious, I've noticed some patterns. A big one is that a lot more Cali people are grind fans than other areas, and city folk tend to be kinda thrashy.

Maybe its all in my head or maybe its obvious, but if you wanna post your favorite subgenre (get nerdy as fuck with that, contributes to a better experiment) and loose description of where you live, that's always fun and I give a shit.

Michigan, spend half my time in the city and half my time in the burbs with a decent amount of nature trips. Very extreme temperatures here. I think its given me a pretty chilled out disposition coupled with enjoying the anguish of less enjoyable weather, so tend to gravitate towards doom. Lots of stoner and traditional always, psychedelic in the summer, then progressively gets more and more depressing with some goth stuff until almost blackened in the dead of winter. Spring time sees a surge of stoner, then a repeat of the process. Very definitive of the four seasons.

Also a lot less people give a shit here because the weather and the metropolitan area are always disappointing us. I always thought giving up was pretty doom. Fuck it, we're doomed, everything's always changing.

Tech thrash is my favorite, and also pure thrash and crossover. Big fan of non-cheesy progressive metal too which is hard to find, and the occasional cheese if it's done well. A little bit of doom, death and black in that order. Inland Empire, Southern California.

Atlanta burbs and I spend some time in the north GA mountains. I like atmospheric bm, folk/blackened folk, and stoner/doom. FWIW.

Currently in a small city in Illinois, before this was Denver. My main source of metal joy is black metal. The more Satanically atmospheric it is, the better.

I live in So Cal, but that really doesn't influence what I listen to. I listen to whatever happens to interest me, but I'm more inclined towards black and death metal.

Frostbitten black metal is a nice escape from the tortuously hot land that is So Cal.

Mainly simplistic black metal, and dark-as-fuck death metal, with tinges of doom, thrash, and traditional metal. I'm also partial to party black/thrash.

From this point of my life I've spent the majority of my time and been raised in a "state" here in Sweden called Norrland. Where there's snow majority of the year (would explain why I get bitchy if it's hotter than ~15 celsius). We usually poo in the woods, cleaning our butt afterwards with bears and are kicking on each others feelings. A place where real men smells pussy and wash their hands with moonshine. You can expect it to be (at least) -20 celsius there and there's no spring and only one day summer otherwise it's just autumn and winter. I moved to Gothenburg 4 years ago. Here the winter is not near the same as in Norrland and you at least have summer a few weeks. My friends favorite genre is Thrash Metal so I automatically are listening to a lot of that but Death Metal will always have the special place for me. I'm picky when it comes to Black Metal (as D_T said, the more atmospheric, the better it's. Caladan Brood, Summoning, Appalachian Winter, Autumn's Kingdom, Mundanus Imperium, etcetera. Prefer the one focusing on nature and so on but also the "classic" bands as Immortal, Burzum, Bathory, Darkthrone, Mayhem, etcetera). But that's pretty much the genres I listen to the most but lately also enjoy music as Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun so I'm gonna expand my knowledge in music like that too.

I grew up in the suburbs of London. I've only ever been a big fan of black and death metal. Got into it via family and the internet so location seems irrelevant.

When it comes to extreme metal I don't think there really are local 'scenes', in the sense of a particular style being dominant, in England. There isn't even really a UK wide one.

There are the heritage inspired BM bands like Wodensthrone, Winterfylleth and Forefather, but they're from the Trve North, North and South of England respectively. There's the 'urban' themed bands like Akercocke/Voices, Anaal Nathrakh and Axis of Perdition. But again, they're from all over the country. And they don't sound especially similar to each other either.

Sticking inside the commuter belt of London, you've got the above Akercocke/Voices, then the likes of Grave Miasma, Craven Idol, Mithras, Cruciamentum, Fen, Spearhead, Meads of Asphodel, Indesinence, Virophage, Scythian, etc. None of which really sound alike.

It feels like extreme metal is more popular now than it was 10 years ago. There seem to be more and bigger gigs, and bands like Mgla will get decent crowds. But my memory may just be flawed. And I don't doubt that metalcore/deathcore/thrash/heavy metal/whatever bands draw far greater numbers of fans, I just don't look for or attend those sorts of gigs.


This reminds me that A Forest of Stars are releasing a new album in February.



Also, RE weather. London and the South East generally has 'decent' weather. Sadly doesn't tend to rain as much as the English (and foreigners) make out, rarely gets below 0c, usually gets quite warm, though not stupidly, incapacitatingly hot, in summer. There's less sun and more rain the further north you head. But it still doesn't get cold.

The idea of their being a "metal scene" in this town is pretty hilarious. There have been live shows though, school bands breaking their guitars and playing smoke on the water.

I used to me into death metal but now my real passion is black metal. I listen to it all the time (and the many sub-genres of black such DSBM, Atmospheric BM even some NSBM). I also listen to doom, viking, progressive and some folk metal. On top of that I have a passion for neofolk and martial industrial.

I'm not entirely sure if that is what is common in the metal scene around here but that is what I listen too.

Edit: This site seems to be inhabited by people mainly in the USA / Canada if this thread is anything to go by.

Southern California weather is: warm to hot all damn year, with 1-3 snows in the mountains per year that melt quickly. You can go to the beach comfortably on most January days.

Also from Michigan. Where I live it's hard to find anyone that is into any metal outside of radio metal (Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Lamb of God, etc) or whatever new shit the scene kids like. As far as I've seen the local music scene is the same way, every band that advertises their stuff as metal is no more than the hard rock that gets played during UFC commercials. I don't believe my surroundings or the weather play too much of an influence on my musical taste.

I've always liked whatever had an evil atmosphere and most of what I enjoy is black metal.
