Metal Preference Influenced by Location?

I've lived in the Houston, TX area for the vast majority of my 37 years, with the last 11 spent north of the metroplex in the suburban area called The Woodlands. Houston has about two or three cold months (some would call them mildly cold) with the rest of the year being warm to stiflingly hot and humid.

I mainly listen to black metal with an epic flair (Graveland, Summoning, Enslaved, Nokturnal Mortum) or of the melodic type (Dawn, Hirilorn, Sacramentum). The Norwegian orthodox stuff bores me for the most part, though there are exceptions (Emperor, Immortal).

I also enjoy traditional doom and doom/death. OSDM and thrash typically bore me, with some exceptions of course.

Also from Michigan. Where I live it's hard to find anyone that is into any metal outside of radio metal (Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Lamb of God, etc) or whatever new shit the scene kids like. As far as I've seen the local music scene is the same way, every band that advertises their stuff as metal is no more than the hard rock that gets played during UFC commercials. I don't believe my surroundings or the weather play too much of an influence on my musical taste.

I've always liked whatever had an evil atmosphere and most of what I enjoy is black metal.

Oh you're basically in K-zoo then. That's another trend I've noticed, metal fans I've talked to from that area usually lean towards aggression and the spikes and chains and all. Here on the east side, you see less people wearing memorabilia at shows. I see more movie t-shirts than vests and patches for instance. More people dig fantasy than a political or morality statement... So it seems.

Also fuck you for getting more good shows than Detroit does. Enjoy your wonderful life.

And I'll be composing a chart of patterns I notice when this thread is a bit longer. Then people can tell me if its bullshit or feasible.

Atlanta gets all the seasons. Hot summers, mostly mild but still often below freezing winters. Waves of humidity/strong storms in spring/summer and dry spells. Autumn is just awesome here. We generally get it all here except for massive snow storms that come maybe every 15 years, moderate snow every now and then. Winters are typically dry and generally when precipitation comes it in warms up above freezing and is just a cold rain.

More data needed. I'm not sure of the general seasons/weather of these places. Four seasons? Temperate changes, or up to 40 degree differences from one day to another like we have here?

Appreciate your posts and would love more.

Our summers are only relatively warm (25 Celsius tops) and our winters are blistering cold (minus 40 to minus 45 Celsius).

I live in Tehran and we have all the seasons over here but springs and summers are usually very sunny. It's a big city and the scene is not very established but I guess most of the fans here are into thrashy stuff.

As for me the taste changes with the weather. I don't listen to a lot of black metal from late spring to early fall when it's still sunny and hot, so I usually stick to headbanging material during the time and when it gets cold I can happily start listening to more atmospheric stuff. Also never been a fan of thrash.

I dunno if it really influences me anymore, but when I was a teenager I used to revel in Winter, listening to Immortal and Enslaved and various Scandinavian metal bands gave me such a buzz trudging though the snow.

Im from Newfoundland Canada, we used to get pretty intense Winters, not so much anymore however. It seems too me that Winters have gotten alot more tame.

Anyway, I think summer Gives me more of a desire to listen to Traditional Heavy Metal, however I just listen too more of that than anything else nowadays anyways.
