Hey guys, name some mics that for your opinion a studio should have!
sorry for my sloppy english......:kickass:

Well the general view around here although theres tons of exceptions obviously is
sm57's on guitar, snare, sometimes toms/vocals and mids on bass
Sennheiser md421 on toms/guitar/snare
Audix D6 on kick
Then a nice Di box for bass/guitar Di's- not a mic but thought I'd mention it.

Vocals vary although the general loved male vocal mic here is the shure sm7b. The general holy grail vocal mic is the neumann u87. The mic I wanna get for vocals is the akg 414 c414- I used one in college and did a shoot out with all the other LDC's they had- u87, rode K2, Rode classic II as well as a few others and it blew them all out of the water. Ain't that expensive in the grand scale of things either

Overheads also vary a ton but alot of guys here like the oktava MK 012's and rode nt-5 on a budget and neumann km184's if you're minted

At the moment I have 3sm57, a pair of ockatavas mk12, a pair of rode nt5, 3 Sennheiser e604, a d6, an At4040, an At2020, and some other shitty mics....
Now I need to upgrade with a md421 and an akg c414....

Se 4400a looks to be a slightly cheaper version of a AKG414, same patterns and similar pads, and $200 less at least in the US now.

Lasse : Why you don't like it? It's harsh in the high end?

yep, it can sound thin and nasal on some vox (it's really good on others though).

the XLII has got this "presence boost" on the 2-3k range which can be nice on some sources but for me takes away from the versatility of the mic.
don't get me wrong, it's still a kickass mic for some things...just not for everything.
it's definitely much better than all the chinese mics etc...but if I'd have to spend another 1k for a LDC I'd rather get a Brauner I think....definitely something warmer/rounder

I tend to like the mic more in Omni. It sounds kinda boxy in Cardioid at times.
414s should be bought and used in pairs. :Smug: but who can afford that.

Also, as Lasse mentioned, bear in mind there are tons of varieties of 414 (two currently in production, lots out), and while the XLII has the presence boost, the XLS is pretty much flat! And then there's the ULS, and the ULS TL, and the ULS TLII, and the EB...
