early technical thrash is where it's at son.
I'm not saying hair metal paved the way for our current generation of music..... but some of it would have 'influenced' some of the current music.

If darwanism played a role in music then modern metal had to com from 80's hair metal. butif Darwanism played a role then crapy bands like fallout boy wouldn't be alive. and its a tough call but I think Eddie Van Halen would win.

Slayer, Morbid Angel, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Celtic Frost, Voivod were all bands from the 80's that significantly influcenced the death metal scene for the 90's. Dunno what was going on in Sweden though.
