Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt has been nominated in the ‘SHREDDER’ category at this years prestigious Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards which take place on June 15th at IndigO2 in London’s iconic O2 Dome.

I saw this the day it was on Opeth.com but I don't think I saw a single thread about it. So I've decided that I could no longer wait for someone to ask the obvious question:

No offense but.. Well, a quote right off the session diary of Watershed would be sufficient I guess.

How about the other new "kid"? Well, Fredrik took command right off the bat and really helped out with everything. If there's a part I was struggling with I just went "Hey, play this..." and he did. I think our rhythms on this one are so tight yet much more alive sounding than ever before. Which brings us to his solos...well, fucking...this guy is making an ass out of me as a guitar player. No need for me to concentrate on any technical shredding type stuff as he simply blows me out of the water. I decided to concentrate on what I do best which is emotional soloing (I think). I'm the slow-hand of death metal I guess, haha!

He is the awesomest rhythm guitarist like, ever. He can play great solos and can play fast enough to match the song, but there is just NO WAY that he can be in the same Shredder poll as the Dragonforce guys.

I don't have a great deal of respect for Dragonforce, I don't even like their music. It's usually just a bunch of hyper-speed exercises that sound like video game sounds. And while I am a devoted fan of Opeth and Mikael Akerfeldt, I think the person who made that poll must have been smoking some heavy shit.

Of course, they could have used 'Shredder' as in 'Heavy Metal Guitarist', which would completely nullify my bleak attempt at a pointless rant.

As for the awards, I think they thought the shredding solos in Heir Apparent or Hex Omega were Mike's solos whereas they're actually Fred's. How stupid.

Anyway, the shredding award should go each and every year to JOHN PETRUCCI.

regardless, dragonforce speed up their songs, as well as can't shred for shit, neither can mike but he is an infinitely better guitarist and musician than all of dragonforce's members combined.

He may not be a better shredder in the studio, but live Mike hits just about every note. Mr. Li manages to hit about 2 notes in every solo he plays live.
To me a perfect live performance at a relatively low technical level is better than a shredding fest with a gazillion errors.

Anyway, the shredding award should go each and every year to JOHN PETRUCCI.

You guys are right. Everytime I listen to Petrucci, I give up soloing for some weeks and just play Iron Maiden stuff. The easy ones I mean.

I think I agree with Mike in his statement that he's "like the slow-hand of death metal"...not to mention that I'm pretty sure that one of the Martin acoustic guitars that he uses (at least mildly) frequently is very similar to the Eric Clapton sig.

Also, with this in mind, what the fuck are most of these guys doing on a best "shredders" list?

Dragonforce annoy me. They remind me of an even more 80s hairband then Dream Theater. I saw them at Commercialismfest (Ozzfest) in 06 and I didnt care for them.

Anyway, back on topic, I dont see Mike as a shredder either but he can sure rock a kick ass mustache. He needs an award for that, the golden stache award.

Haha, yes, it's odd that they nominated me whose not a shredder at all, but out of the other guys I guess only Skolnick has shred-tendencies or something, I like him the best out of those guys. Dragonforce sounds more like a speeded up and quantized keyboard to me.

Also why isn't Fred nominated with me since all the others are both guitar players from each band? Fred's a proper shredder too...

Well, well, I guess it's safe to say that none of my personal favourite players will ever make it into polls like these. Feel doesn't really matter that much apparently. Who cares anyways...
