MIKE's New Blog post....TEH FLOATING CASINO

These boat-trips are hardly original anymore.
They are becoming a fad here in sweden and i dont like it. There was this thing called "Gates of Metalbåten" last year, Sweden Rock has one planned now in feb, Close-Up has gone from a normal indoor festival to the boat-thing and will probably do it again.
It sucks.

didn't know that :) ... but it is still nice to see these kind of events with amazing bands and other side events. hey, the only events they organize around here are pretty much the same things over and over again, very rarely with different really good bands or movies ...

If you are only interested in Katatonia and Opeth and isnt very interested in casinos and swimmingpools etc it is expensive and all of a sudden not worth it for many of us.

Well if that's all that interests you and you have no interest the legendary Comus, and the other bands that might surprise you and thus perhaps even expanding your music experience, then no...probably not for you.

The reason this is happening on a boat is that there weren't any clubs in Stockholm who could accommodate the festival, and since people are coming from all over the world, a place to stay was a factor. It just seemed the most logical path.

Boat trips aren't original. This one is. This lineup is, and the vibe will be totally different from the usual Finland ferry, where it's normally all about cheap alcohol and easy women. The last Mellotronen cruise was goddamn awesome because all who attended were music appreciators, so it wasn't a race to get plastered, Apart from that, another difference is that the Melloboat will take place on a ferry twice the size of those that host the other happenings, so it will be subject to documentaries, and get major newspaper and tv coverage. Of course, that might not mean anything to you, but it does perhaps point out that this isn't the average boat trip.

And no matter where you hold this kind of even, people are bound to find something that they don't like about it. That Close-Up thing you mentioned when it happened at 3 venues...I heard people bitch that it was at 3 places and not 1. If it's an outdoor event and it rains, people aren't too happy either. You can't please everyone all the time. (I'm not saying people here are bitching, I'm just saying it happens, no matter where you hold large events).

As for it being expensive, take something idiot, like seeing Carolina av Ugglas in Nalen last week. It apparently costed 375 SEK plus prepaid fee,and this boat you pay 850 SEK for 17 concerts, which comes to about 50 SEK each, and with all that you get a cabin with a shower, toilet, clean towels, you name it.

Funny how the in Hong Kong, South America and the USA don't complain about th money or not knowing who the hell Emika Klasdotter is. It's the guy who lives up the road.

Basically, you have to be open. It's not a boat for metalheads only, or prog heads only, or singer/songwriter fans only. It's for anyone open for an awesome music experience.

I doubt everyone is getting a 4 bed C-cabin though.
And im comparing it to the option of buyin a 1-day ticket that usually is available otherwise. But i see what you mean.

Kinda funny yeah, but thats the reason i guess, since i usually dont need to pay for a place to sleep i didnt really think about that from the others perspective. For people coming a long way it really is damn good deal.
Thats probably a big reason these boat-festivals are so common nowdays.
I just hope we get more indoor stuff like the close-up festival and not everything moves to the boats.

i was there last year and was amazing.
and that was one day only with a full-force of 8h non stop concerts.
now it's 2 days so i expect to find time to relax a bit :)

Oh hello, Eugenio!

(and Qth, I doubt everything will move to the boats. Maybe Close-Up's only doing the boat thing this year, and will do something different next year.)

Are we expecting this to be the first time new material is heard? If they're debuting a new song on the boat, does that mean the album is gonna come out before the boat? haha i really just wanna know when i can possess this record!

hello!
took some time to realize who you are but now i know ;)
in fact i asked you some time ago if you were stefan dimle of paatos & mellotronen, being so informed about the cruise.

see you there!

Seems doubtful to me that they'd debut new material on the boat... I feel like they're gonna be protective of the songs until the album's release or the release of the first single.

"This gig will be our warm up for the coming UK and US tour and we are most likely to premier a new song on there + a few ol' tunes." That's from the blog entry.
