I was watching CTV (local station covering the 2010 Olympics) and they aired this clip of a Georgian luger flying off the course into the pole.

I'm reluctant to post the link because it's pretty disturbing but this was just crazy. He's gotta be dead- the sound it made when hit the pole was just horrifying.

EDIT: Just saw an update on the news, he hit that corner at 144 km/h.
EDIT 2: Video's been removed (surprise, surprise) and unfortunately the guy died. Pretty sad.

No, he didn't.

Apparently he's the very first sportsman dying at the Olympics while competing ever.

Edit: At the Winter Olympics at least...

Edit 2: Look further down for clarification on that.

I'm sure the video will make it's way back onto the internet sooner or later. I just can't believe the discretion of the news networks that aired the clip without know whether the guy had survived. And yes apparently he didn't make it- so sad.

I can only imagine what this would have looked like if he had've been skeleton-ing instead. :erk:

Which news network aired this? The clip above wasn't part of news coverage. I have only seen still photographs from news agencies.

It's quite macabre that the clip was removed due to copyright claims.

A terrible accident. Apparently, it's the fastest course in the world. ... The athletes have nicknamed it, "The Elevator Shaft."

I really feel bad for those competing in The Skeleton event. That's gotta be terrifying on this course.

Not to be a jerk or anything, but if you make a living basically sliding on your back down a lane at 144km/h then don't be suprised if sooner or later the grim reaper gets tired of your insolance and shoves a scythe up your ass.

I just can't believe the steel beams coming out of that turn weren't padded... that's negligence on the part of whoever designed it
