Does he use a 5 string on this album? My hearing sucks, so I'm not quite sure if some of this stuff is lower than the E or not... maybe it's just a funky tuning. So, what does he play/tune on this album? Thanks.

According to the TBYF bass tab, Johan used a 5-string, fretless bass, the bottom string down-tuned to a D. I don't know about the other songs.

Hmm... damn. I was hoping I just sucked at deciphering notes :(. In the video I have of them playing The Drapery Falls, he uses a fretted 4 string, I believe. Oh well, once I get my 5 string I'll be happy.

Er... tuned DOWN to a D? Wouldn't that be extremely low? I've tuned my E down to an A to play some Fear Factory (a while ago), but going from a B to a D is ludacris... does he actually do that?

...no...

Oh I dunno, the bloke on the tab said it was . I'm just following him. :) Okay, totally ignore everything I've said on this thread.

Too bad Johan is no longer in the band, bass on Morningrise was amazing and those songs never sounds same with the current line-up. Bass and drums worked so good with each other on Morningrise. But where is Johan now? Any new band or anything?

maybe someone should start at thread "where the former opeth musicians are?" or send Mikeal an e-mail and ask him if he knows. Cause the world wants to know.

I really loved the bass lines in both morningrise.

At first I didn't like the high-tone, high-profile bass - but that was then. I really do like how it accompanies the guitars, almost as a third guitar, chiming in on the harmonies.

Wasn't a major area of contention that Mikael didn't really like the sound that Johan was insisting they use? If so, I doubt we'll be hearing any of that bass again.

The bass has improved over the last 3 albums (SL, BWP and Deliverance), enough that a bassist wouldn't get bored (ie: not just playin' whatever key the guitars are in and adding some fills).. but I'm not a bassist, so I guess it's time for me to shut up.
