They have inspired many, but the genre prog metal is a pretty new "invention".
They were influental, but not prog.

Pretty much every black metal band give either Anthems, nightside, or wrath as an influence.
That and they were probably one of the first black metal after venom bands.
I call that influence.

Watchtower were the first technical metal band, and they predated most of the prog metal bands, too.

QR wasn't considered prog metal until years later, because the genre didn't exist and it was closer to power metal, really. Dream Theater is where the term came from because they emulated prog rock bands but played it heavy. Some people even consider Rush prog metal, though.

I don't really have a point.

Emperor have influenced more than just black metal bands. I sat with Warrel and Jim drinking beer talking about why we loved Anthems. Slipknot, Mudvayne, and a few other bands while having no sound in their own music like Emperor consider them a prime influence. Not sure how, don't listen to numetal really, but Emperor are a big part influencing some of the mainstream bands in metal, and inspiring the better, less known bands.
