I actually thought about seeing that. It looked lame but still like it would be fun. What did you like about it?

hmm, it was an old fashioned revenge flick, almost western mixed with some Death Wish.
and Detroit never fails as a grim backdrop to movies.

I'm interested to see what Park Chan Wook does with Sympathy For Mrs Vengeance later this year...

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance ;) Yeah, me too. It's out in Korea already, with subtitles, I'm thinking of getting a copy. In the mean time if you feel like watching some pretty Korean flicks check out A Bitterweet Life, in cinemas at the end of January

anyone a fan of eli roth? he wrote and directed "cabin fever" which i thought was a great horror flick. i own the dvd and it has all the extras on it and hes a pretty funny dude. i appreciate how he injected humor into the mix. anyway, looks like hes got a new movie coming out called "hostel". ive been waiting for this guy to come out with something else for a long time. anyone seen this yet? is it out yet?
that said, you should see "cabin fever" if you havent already. alot of people thought it was shit......but they are fags that dont like horror movies.

I've seen a preview at a film festival, and it looked good. No idea when it's out, but looking forward to seeing it. The last thing I saw with him involved was 2001 Maniacs, which was very entertaining

wha? never heard of this. is it a movie? i should see it. i loved what he did with "cabin fever". hes a fuckin wierd guy

Yeah, it was a remake of 2000 Maniacs (drive in classic), I saw it at a festival here. I think it was pretty small scale. Eli Roth had a cameo, and was executive producer. Pretty funny, gory horror movie, out on DVD already, worth it if you like cheap, squelchy horror :)

really looking forward to HOSTEL ...

Russell, you mentioned some great horror flick in the summer I believe, about some girls in some cave or something ... what was the name of that?

Goddamnit - y'know, I knew it was called that, but one of my mates shouted at me the other week loud and long enough to make me actually believe that it was Mrs Vengeance, rather than Lady Vengeance. I'm gonna beat that motherfucker with a brick now.

BTW - it that pretty Korean flicks or pretty Korean chicks? :D

The Descent - watch it, it's absolutely brilliant. Best horror film of last year, no competition. Well, maybe from Wolf Creek, but seriously, watch it, it slays.

yeah, ive heard of 2000 maniacs. roth apparently makes cameos in all his movies. he was the campy skater dude in cabin fever. i dont see how a tongue-in-cheek character is going to fit in hostel though - it looks pretty extreme.

Sounds like The Descent as dill mentioned, but it wasn't me that recommended it ;) I have the special edition sitting in front of me right now, can't wait to watch it, I've heard great things. I may have mentioned it in May tho, I did see a reel of it then, and from that ten minutes it looked decent

Wolf Creek was also pretty cool, although I do have slight problems with the morals of basing a movie on somebody's murder :erk:

Looking forward to Hostel, can't for the life of me remember what was in the preview I saw tho. It was about ten minutes, but since I watched 24 movies in those 4 days, I forget a few of them :dopey:

hahaha, what horror movie ISNT predicated on someone elses terrible misfortune?

Very few, but to me there's a distinction between making a fictional story to provide entertainment, and creating entertainment from some truly horrific events.

I think I mentioned this earier in the theard, but if it's a genuine documentary fine, with a purpose, not merely entertainment, but the thing with Wolf Creek is that nearly all of it was fictional. But it used the fact it was "based on true events" to sell the movie. Imagine if you were the parents of one of the people that was actually killed, and you hear that somebody had made sa story out of your child's death, in which they were tortured and then killed, which we don't actually know is the case. It's not a big issue for me, it just bugs me at times, and seems both tactless and insensitive.

agreed.
how about texas chainsaw massacre?

or the more recent tv movie about BTK? sheesh. people were BRUTALLY MURDERED. i watched anyway.

I love Texas (the original). Making something like a documentary (pretending uit is based on true events) to me just gives it more impact, marks it apart from slick movies and makes it more visceral, no issues there. Never saw BTK, I'd probably still watch it, just complain about it afterwards

FOUR BROTHERS ... another surprisingly decent flick ... seems like Singleton is back in form.

My sentiments exactly. Didn't expect to enjoy that at all, but it's pretty good.

Also watched (recently):
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (quite enjoyed this, especially the visuals)
The Ring 2 (garbage)
Murderball (very fucking cool documentary)
Dukes of Hazzard (that was a waste of 90 minutes, for sure)

I want to rent a fairly recent movie this evening, something in the blockbuster vein but I'd like to avoid brainless dialogues and loads of useless effects for the sake of it. Any suggestion?
