I have purchased the following 2005 albums ...

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavour
Between the Buried and Me - Alaska
Cryptopsy - Once Was Not
Porcupine Tree - Dead Wing

it doesn't have to be heavy...but what other albums would you guys consider are "must-buy" albums of 2005

Wow, almost identical to my list, except I add:

Corrosion of Conformity-In the Arms of God

Bloodbath-Nightmares Made Flesh
Dark Tranquility-Character

Ordered Gojira based on the raves and the samples that I've heard, and may still order Cephalic Carnage to wrap up the year.

In alphabetical order:

Betzefer - Down low
Bolt Thrower - Those once loyal
Cathedral - The garden of unearthly delights
Circle II Circle - The middle of nowhere
Fields of the Nephilim - Mourning sun
Moonsorrow - Verisäkeet
Mourning Beloveth - A murderous circle
Nevermore - This godless endeavor
New Model Army - Carnival
Opeth - Ghost reveries
Primordial - The gathering wilderness
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Nevermore - This Godless ENdeavour
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicker
Cryptopsy - Once was Not
Beneath the Massacre - Evidence of Inequity

Forget about Nile and Cryptopsy, they are by no means a must buy. If you're desperate for death metal, you can't go wrong with the latest Bolt Thrower. Great stuff.

i see almost all of you think the new Pine Tree album kicked ass XD
And i gotta agree - i've seen them play live twice this year :D

No one mentioned Blut Aus Nord's EP - Thematic Emanations Of Archetypal Multiplicity and also the one before that The Work Which Transforms God. It was released in 2004 but it was rereleased with the aforementioned EP when they signed to candlelight
Those two are a definate must buy for any lovers of disturbing soundscapes and horror inducing black metal

Another of my must buys would be the new Sigh album Gallows Gallery, it is just fucking crazy. Almost verging on power metal but just saving itself by being so crazy.

And as one other person said, the new Akercocke album which just blew my mind when i first heard it

One last amazing record i heard this year was Terraformer by Knut. Its just one totally amazing album, mixing noisecore with electronics. Definately a must buy or at least a must check out

Some others worth a listen:
Hate - Anaclasis
The Meads Of Asphodel - Damascus Steel
Burst - Origo
Boris with Merzbow - Sun Baked Snow Cave
The new Dark Funeral album
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal

and probably about another hundred

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Nine inch Nails - With Teeth
In flames - Come clarity (Technically a 2006 release but it leaked this year)

thats all i can remember for 05....

No, it's the album of the year for sure. So, that makes it a "must buy."

Arcturus
Nile
dark tranquility
syl
grand magus
bolt thrower
I respect your opinion but in no way will any Nevermore album reach a "must-boy" point.

Blut Aus Nord, Sigh, Knut - good choices man, fucking good choices.

I really love HydraHead, they just have a lot of great stuff. Granted, as with Pelican, I have to be in a pretty specific mood to listen...when I am in that mood, they are just unbeatable.

if you don't love at least one Nevermore album, you are not into metal enough yet.

mine:

Arvo Part - Lamentate
Sigur Ros - Takk
Meshuggah - Catch 33
In Slaughter Natives - Resurrection: The Return Of The King
Sunn O))) - Black One

and for good measure,

Nordvargr - Vitagen
Birchville Cat Motel - Chi Vampires

Old Man's Child - Vermin
Naglfar - Pariah
Hypocrisy - Virus

I excluded the one's people have already mentioned. Ye.

Character - Dark Tranquillity
GR- Opeth
Mein Rasend Herz- In Extremo
Doomsday Machine - Arch Enemy
Sideshow Symphonies - Arcturus
Blood Inside - Ulver

thanks for all the great responses... there is a lot of stuff here that I have not checked out...:headbang:

TWWTG is 2004, but still good stuff. Highly recommended.

I second Nile, and add Origin - Echoes of Decimation, probably the fastest album I've ever heard. Tons of sweeps. Fun stuff. Underrated DM band.

The Karl Sanders and Hate Forest albums aren't bad either.

as i said in the 10,000 other threads on this topic:

Riverside - Second Life Syndrome, by a mile.

many others that have already been mentioned would be up there as well.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
Death Cab for Cutie - Plans
Sufjan Stevens - Come on and Feel the Illinoise
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing

That's my top 6 must have for 2005.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Hypocrisy - Virus
Obituary - Frozen in Time
Enslaved - ISA
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
Bolt Thrower- Those Once Loyal

I respect yours, too, but considering they're the best metal band on the planet and Jeff Loomis is the best metal guitarist, a lot of people would agree with me when I say that each and every one of their albums would be considered a "must buy."
