Okay, so really such things are subjective, so talk like this comes with a grain of salt for sure. That stated....

Despite the extra thick layers of cheese this band is prone too, and despite the fact that in my personal "halls of the great," list such a band as the below really stands out as kind of out of place.....
I was listening to Manowar's Into Glory Ride today (for the first time in some time), and I was reminded that Eric Adams is an amazing singer. I owned most of the early Manowar records (always with a strange air of sheepishness, admittadly), and of those this one is the most atmospheric of the bunch. But, aside from that, Eric Adams is just plain stellar from start to finish. In the stratosphere really.

I honestly hold this up in similar esteem as say, Black Sabbath - Born Again, so far as pure vocal performance goes.

Seriously.

What a coincedence! I have been playing that album to death the last few days. 'Into Glory Ride' has always been my favorite Manowar album. Since I have seen Ross The Boss perform on KIT with a German Manowar tribute band I have been playing a lot of classic Manowar albums.

Btw the Ross the Boss gig on KIT was amazing!! One of the best gigs I saw ever!! He basically showed us what Manowar could have been without the BS and the looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong speeches and the even loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonger useless bass and drum solo's. And believe me we are missing out BIG TIME!!

That's cool to here really. I did hear he left the band because he was "fed up." And personally speaking I really can't take the very things you've mentioned. Those weird speeches and solos. Just plain strange. Plus, they haven't really made a good record in a long time. I'd be interested in hearing/seeing what you're talking about. Maybe he'll make an album? Did he just do Manowar stuff at the show?

Yea he 'only' did Manowar stuff at the show. But he did it great!! My throat was hoarse when the gig was over.

Imagine 'Secrets of Steel, 'Battle Hyms' and Mountains played superbly and without any crappy speeches. Damn I would be going again in a sec when he played another show in Europe. It was great!

Don't mention it...
It was so lame of DeMaio when he pulled his half hour speech in Milano where I saw them. For Christ's sake, they could've played at least 5 songs during the time he occupied all by himself and his blabbering... :erk:
Someone should really cut down those useless speeches and solos, but since DeMaio pulls all the strings, that's not gonna happen.

As for vocal performances I must give my kudos to Ian Gillan especially on "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Made In Japan" and "Perfect Strangers" (I guess then "Born Again" may apply too).

Iommi/Hughes - 'Grace'

I'm a huge Gillan fan, and absolutely appreciate that his most important work is with Deep Purple etc. Still, it's just the fact that he growls like a demon, screams like Child in Time, and generally sings with intense emotion all through Born Again. It may not be the definitive Ian Gillan recording, but I really do think it ranks up there with his best performances. Witness Disturbing The Priest, Born Again, etc. He's on fire on that CD.

Wtf did they play music at all.

Yeah, they did a solo thing as well...
But I wouldn't call THAT music, tho...
Their show lasted about 2 hours, so there were songs played as well, but too much time wasted on things that reminded me more of a political party rally than a HM concert.

Jesus Christ Superstar was the name that popped into my head when I clicked on this thread....

Since we are talking Jesus Christ Superstar here, has anyone heard the version of Gethsemane on the new Vanden Plas? It's smoking.....

NOW my interest is piqued.

That may be my contendor for greatest rock vocal. I'd be interested to see what someone else could do with it....

Well, the guy from Vanden Plas is understated in a classy way, so I"ll not give predictions as to whether you'll like it or not. I think of him as a cross between a subdued John Arch, Geoff Tate, and I don't know who else; maybe a mild sprinkling of Biff Byford..? No gravel like Gillan, so it's a different presentation for sure. Still, the band plays it too, so it also more of an overall metal presentation. It's the perfect finish to a fantastic album.

Same here, I didn't know about it and now I must look for it. Thanks for the info EW :kickass:

Lacuna Coil - 'Within Me'

My nomination is Ken Nardi, hands down. His versatility is astounding, and I think he has a quality voice, too. I also admire vocalists more when they also play an instrument, because that is a really challenging feat haha.
