Really, an Ultralead? I thought In the Eyes of Fire was all VHT Deliverance. Hmmm...

I sported a VHT 50/CL for awhile......one HELL of an amp. Along with all VHTs that is, beautiful pieces of equipment. I'll have a UL someday, I just don't have the ~$3k yet.

@stringy : they recorded the album before using the deliverance. i got the info from Buzz so yea

@joey , i think it's more than just nice preamps that are the missing links

experienced/golden ears
mixing skills
compression skills
micing skills
vision

are just some that i can run off the top of my head
i would hardly call those techniques primitive, they've just become a stable workhorse in micing up guitars but there's so many fine subtleties to the art of a 57 to the cone of the cab

like andy said : i'm able to get that tone i envisaged in my head and that's what keeps people like me and colin richardson in the business.

you forgot the most important factor at the top of that list; the player! :)

i agree with what everyone has said, but...

you can have adam d on guitar, his comparison guitar, a perfect vision, the greatest song, an awesome amp, the best instrument cable, perfect microphone placement, the best AC power... blah blah blah

hook it up to a shitty preamp and its gonna sound shitty in the end!

maybe not on its own, but compare it to something done with nice expensive preamps, and you'll hear a world of difference.

wish i had some nice preamps, woooooooooo.

that's cool as shit toolish circle. do you know the guys in kse?

i'm gonna see them in new orleans in two weeks. it'd be killer to hang out with those guys after the show.
