Two bands that come to me right away, besides the king of them all; Metallica :Puke: who has completely changed their sound is Paradise Lost and Theatre of Tragedy. Paradise Lost was a great doom/death band now they play melodic gothic rock. Treatre of Tragedy were another great gothic/doom band but now they play Techno/new wave/dance rock. Bands that made you  now just make you :ill:

Ulver used to play extremely good black metal, now they are firmly rooted in Electronica. They've made the transition suprisingly well. I like their post-black Metal material just as much as their black metal material.

While not metal, king crimson is the king of completly changing their sound. Practically every single album is different. Otherwise, umm, yeah, death is already mentioned. Meshuggah did too. Too bad I can only think of really obvious ones right now.

I don't like their newer stuff as I did their bm. I was going to say Ulver though:mad:

Yeah, but I don't think they've been through bad changes. It's just that their first albums sound somehow like Metallica, as they were saying that that band was kind of an idol for them. And later they've just found their own style and started to sound absolutely different. I like their latest stuff much more than that what they've started with.

And Theatre Of Tragedy is just a piece of crap, imo.

Sepultura, i heard the new album was a return for them so i picked it up when i found it cheap, i listened through once, wasn't too impressed... what do yous think?

Behemoth, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Amorphis, Darkthrone to a degree and Burzum (gone from making dark and evil black metal to computer generated beeps and shit :D )

^ yeah your right, but even on the archives its got 88% from 3 reviews, still the best source for the quaility of album is to listen to it yourself and decide... i will have too relisten, but this is definetly no return to past outputs.
