Name your top [number] songs ever

I didn't even know there was a bass solo there first time I heard it. I don't really care to check now. I still don't see any reason to see why Cliff Burton gets the hype that he does, other than being in Metalica$h and getting crushed by a bus.

If Cliff ever got a decent mix on the old Metallica albums, nobody would wonder why he was so cool. :Spin:

Well actually upon reflection, I have come up with a song, its the 1st movement of Gyorgy Ligeti's Requiem. The most intense, depressing, epic, foreboding, atonal, piece of music I have ever heard.

Cliff played a mean bass guitar in a genre that isn't really known for cool bass work, used Rickenbacker basses which are undoubtedly the coolest-looking bases ever, and was generally a cool guy who didn't deserve getting crushed by a bus. Or, in the immortal words of Sunn O))): I dream of Lars Ulrich being thrown the bus window instead of my master Mystikall Kliff Burton.
The trouble I have is that I listen to his basslines and it's stuff I'd play when I was 15, really. I just get the impression he'd still be hero-worshipped if he played the triangle with a side missing...don't quite cut it.

WRONG! Sorry man, you just are. :p

Cliff was a flashy player when he wanted to be, his solos are pretty out there and are the main reason why people loved him. If you ever get a chance to see Cliff 'em All do so, some of the live performances are like a man possessed by bass, wah, and distortion. Awesome stuff.

Also, referring to the "stuff I'd play at 15," if you mean simple, that's another aspect of what made him so awesome! He could be one of the flashiest players around, 5 minutes later lay down a simple solid and effective groove like on Jump in the Fire.

Some of my absolute favorite songs, one per band:

Morbid Angel - Thy Kingdom Come
Dissection - Thorns of Crimson Death
Conception - Among The Gods

Burzum - Dunkelheit
Dark Tranquillity - Silence, and the Firmament Withdrew
Dark Tranquillity - To a Bitter Halt
Darkthrone - Transilivania Hunger
Darkthrone - To Walk the Infernal Fields
Deströyer 666 - Tyranny of the Inevitable
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Immortal - Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)
Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time
In Flames - Upon an Oaken Throne
In Flames - Jotun
Katatonia - Love of the Swan
Katatonia - Deadhouse

That covers some of it, at least, although it's next to impossible to staple it down completely. This list may be subject to change, but most of the mentioned songs are long-time favorites

Whoa, now two members of Kayo Dot have posted at RC. Wasting hours upon hours of crappy promos = worth it.

Meh, I can play whacked-out bass solos too :loco: just can't afford wah and distortion (unnecessary for bass anyway). My mate has Cliff 'Em All, I think...maybe New Years watching. I'd prefer Conan though :)

Watch both!

Dist. and wah are tons o' fun on bass, distortion used sparingly is very effective, and wah is fun when I'm layin' down some phat phunky beats. :negro:

Distortion used a lot is also effective, se Sodom, Motörhead or Sodömhead (sodom playing motörhead covers and I think sodom songs sounding pretty much like motörhead songs count as well)

AUSGEBOMBT!
AUSGEBOMBT!
AUSGEBOMBT!
AUSGEBOMBT!

(repeat ad thrasheum)

Bass distortion is fun. On a semi-related note, the reason a lot of people (including myself) don't list Lemmy as a great bass player is because he played the bass like a guitar–really well, but not exactly bass playing. I think Cliff did the same thing frequently. So maybe that has something to do with it.

gotta agree that 'to a bitter halt' is better than 'sun...' in the long run
the list isn't very precise though, i suppose a man who often mistakens his middle name shouldn't reply to an ''ever'' thread

nokturnal mortum - kuyaviya...
