Name your top [number] songs ever

What is "bass playing" anyway?

It sounds kinda stupid saying that Lemmy and Cliff weren't "bass players". They were playing a bass, no matter how they played it, they were still "playing bass".

Songs:

1. Bathory - One Rode to Asa Bay
2. Katatonia - not sure.. but there are a lot of possibilities here
3. Bathory - Dies Irae
4. Bathory - Shores in Flames
5. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
6+. something by Empyrium, Summoning, Goat Horn, Aeternus, Slough Feg, Tankard, more Bathory, and many more bands besides...

I'm only going to mention my fave metal songs, as I guess my favourite punk songs don't make for an interesting read for y'all.

Aeternus - Warrior Of The Crescent Moon, Under The Eternal Blackened Sky
Arcturus - To Thou Who Dwellest In The Night, The Chaos Path
Borknagar - Oceans Rise, Colossus, Revolt, The Genuine Pulse, Four Element Synchronicity

Not in order:

Iced Earth - Dracula
Queensryche - Take Hold of the Flame
Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls
Dio - The Last in Line
Motley Crue - 10 Seconds to Love
Amon Amarth - Death in Fire
Opeth - Face of Melinda
Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
Updated:

In hindsight, the Crue pick was a nostalgia pick. Note even sure if it's my favorite Crue song. The Amon Amarth pick was a "pick of the day" kind of pick.

Given a little more thought, and in the spirit of Metal, my list goes to 11.

Anthrax - Medusa
Aska - Crown Of Thorns
Dio - All the Fools Sailed Away
Iced Earth - Dracula
Mad Season - Long Gone Day
Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls
Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
Opeth - Face of Melinda
Queensryche - Take Hold of the Flame
Redemption - Memory
Zero Hour - Demise & Vestige

Zod

Dulcimer - Starlight

great song indeed, Sonnet to the Fall is another highlight from that disregarded gem of an album.
Ever heard anything by Spirogyra? They're one of my favouriite number from the period, heavily ISB-influenced but more proggy in an early Crimson sense.

Also I might have to add Fullmoon's The Pagan Mountain as a perfectly suitable best song ever, be it only for the bonerific primeval riff kicking in at 1'15'' :kickass:

Just in passing, some tracks that certainly made an impression on me in recent months. Not metal at all though. I'd be glad to elaborate if I had more time. Links if you're curious about some of these :

Mr.Bungle - The Bends

Miles Davis - Blue in Green

Mats & Morgan - Hollmervalsen
I believe the whole album was recorded on TV, or at least it was played there which is amazing when you think of it.

(the keyboardist is blind if
ever you were wondering)

Gong - Master Builder

The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist
Good fun

Gentle Giant - Schooldays
This will please Doomcifer. The middle section starting around 2.50 is just amazing.

Scott Walker - Farmer in the City
Excuse the video

Talkings Heads - Heaven (hard to choose there)

Off the top of my head.

Dulcimer's s/t is amazing NEARLY start to finish, with things like the chorus from Pilgrim from the City, and the closer, Suzanne, dragging it down a little bit. A few too many campy, uninspired bits plaguing an otherwise great listen.

Yeah, I have a Spirogyra album downloaded but I rarely listen to it. On the ipod it goes!
