Hey everyone, I posted this track in a different thread, but that was about guitar EQ and I feel this is different enough for its own thread. Basically, I'm pretty happy with the guitar tone as it is now (it's Laboga Mr. Hector for those wondering). But I feel bass is my weakest link right now and I want to learn how to get it right, and studying other threads hasn't cut it for me. So if anyone's good at getting a decent ITB bass tone I'd love some advice! Anyway I just bounced this, it's the song without any bass- so if anyone's interested you can download the zip with the bass DI (and the rest of the song files- drum stem, raw guitars) as well and have a go at getting a tone that works for the rest of the mix...

and here's the original zip with the bass DI

I really appreciate any help I can get, as usual!

I did this totally in the box in about 5 minutes. I did not touch the raw guitars or the raw drums, just processed the bass.

It always helps to use a real instrument before tone chasing something. A MIDI bass doesn't respond the same way a real bass does.

I'll download these and check it out. I know midi bass isn't going to sound as good as a real bass w a good player, but that's what was done for this album and can't be changed now. The bass program I used is a very good one though, Prominy SR5 Rock bass

Also, it's saying server problem when I try to download those files... also can you make them mp3s? Are they in your public dropbox folder?

Edit: seems like dropbox is just having some problems right now... all the images I have hosted there are broken links right now

Just tried listening to your mix, it's really hard to give it a good listen because the bass is totally out of alignment from the rest of the mix... the song tempo is 194 if that helps...the mix file might have delay compensation so you can just tap to the transient on it

Anyone else? I have the Ampeg SVX plug but I've had trouble getting a good tone from it... anyone use it using the split bass method? Like SVX for lows and a guitar amp sim for highs? Bass confuses the hell out of me....

Here's a mix I just bounced with the same printed bass in there, I just eqd it a bit... for some reason I had the hi pass up to like 90 hz (must've read that on here somewhere). I put it back to around 40 and it got its balls back. I also just did some surgical EQ on some strange frequency peaks. Does this sound decent enough or do you think I need to totally redo it?

I'll take a stab at this in a bit. do you have any guitar dis and drums in midi? I'd like to try doing one of both.

Cool! Unfortunately no. I do have Guitar DIs somewhere, but not drum midi readily available...plus some of those drums are real, like snare and overheads. That wouldn't really help me in this case anyway, since I'm trying to get the bass to fit in this mix, with these drums and guitars... any thoughts on the last mix I just posted?

Well, I attempted. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/19917325/Attempt.mp3 Guitars were really woofy around 125hz to 175hz. I used a multiband comp. But it lost power quickly. Therefore I pushed the gain up a little bit. I was too lazy to automate it so it clips a few time. But you can still get the general idea on what I was going for. The snare practically drowned out throughout the mix. Bass is two tracks. CLA bass for the grit, and Rbass for the sub. Its not very audible in the mix. I stopped trying because I couldn't get the snare to stand out and the guitars to sit right especially in the intro, it was very scratchy. If you have any questions feel free to ask if its poopy just forget you ever heard it Maybe someone else will have better luck.

This sounds fine to me. I feel like the guitars are just a tiny bit on the loud side.
May I ask what you did to the guitar tracks? eq/process wise?

Did you even try to put the track I processed into the mix you are working on?

Hey, thanks! Here's a screen of what I did to the guitar bus.

Does the bass sound ok? I used the same processed bass I had, I just put more lows back into it and did some surgical EQ.
