Threadjacking: How is the book "Illium?" I've come across a review or two and was somewhat intigued by it.
So am I. Naught wrong with some racist humour, and I don't think that the things that were said in this thread were anything more than humour (a bit respectlessly here and there), but it seems that when you point that out, the people who are ranting are too busy climbing on their pedestals to see that only a fraction of the posts in this thread were even racist to begin with.
I will only add this: the significance of words does not exist in idosynchratic or idiolectic vacuums. Putting the whole weight of value upon the person perceiving the word is flawed as words always contain the weight of cultural significance. Words are reference points for events, emotional context, history. Anyone claiming they use the word "my pals/fag/wetback/etc." without it meaning anything negative or the associated meanings is full of shit. You know exactly how it is being referenced, and you entirely conscious of what effects it can have for those who have ultimately had those words used antagonistically against them.
Yes, it would be best if people could break down the weight of ages clinging to our shared means of communication, reinvent them to take away all shit that's piled high over millenia of humans fucking each other in the ass... but it doesn't happen over night. And no one has any more right to complain about people being "overly-sensitive" than those who would stifle free expression in attempt to gloss over the harsh reality.
I've been coming to this forum for a long time, and love it here and
respect everyone here. True, when I see threads like "black people haha" or this one: I tend to take them as the joke they are and nothing more.
Everyone who knows me knows I'll be the first to tell any jewish joke; just let me.
However, I think what Trace was trying to say, is that none of us can expect any random fan of a band, which their forum we are using, to understand
the joke as we do. Saying "my pals" and how dumb black people are on a band's forum, is in my opinion, a bit tasteless.
With that being said, that doesn't mean that I'm holier than thou and never said silly racist jokes about jews on the UM myself.
At the same time, one might complain that since some of us made "fun" of Jace Mereel being a virgin, it might affect other virgins
coming to the Nevermore forum and be offended.... it's a never ending race, really.
Still: try to see his point in the macro picture instead the micro one...
which brings me to:

True true true.
And like I said, I can follow him to that extent. It's the holier-than-thou drama queen spectacle that I find contemptible. However, I think what Trace was trying to say, is that none of us can expect any random fan of a band, which their forum we are using, to understand the joke as we do.

edit: and penguin, he means mayonaise. Funny thing is, most of us don't even eat that shit. I think Mr. Kingdom has maybe watched a bit too much stereotypical portrayals on TV, yes?
Ilium is frigging fantastic. Olympos is really disappointing but has a few great scenes; honestly, the first one is fine as a standalone novel.Threadjacking: How is the book "Illium?" I've come across a review or two and was somewhat intigued by it.

I've almost picked of Ilium a few times based on its name alone. I shall do so now with confidence that it's gonna be pretty good.
stfu and eat a waffle
Y'know, I kind of respected your point of view (not so much your ways of stating it), but now you just turn out to be a frustrated loser. And one who's even unfunny at that.stfu and eat a waffle
Well, technically it's not racism, since he isn't mocking my race, but my nationality; but yeah, our friend metalkingdom's showing what a prat he is. Funny how he comes in and rants about principles, yet when he's provoked, his principles don't seem that important after all.also, I dig how Stormo is fairly civil and far from racist in his attempt to dispute with metalkingdom, while mk's retort is base racism. NICE.
I'll bet mk thinks we all speak French. He called us fake-France, after all. Shows how much that dick knows. By the way, I'm still waiting for you to come to Belgium so we can have a cold, strong Belgian beer?I'll defend Belgium with a passion. I love that country.
Vlaams bier, vlaams everything!
