New CD's that you have gotten recently

listening to the new Arkona and Portrait albums for review. In high school I was really big into folk metal, but only a few bands have stuck with me. Arkona is one of them, and this album is thoroughly fucked up. Stuff of nightmares, like Masha Scream did at least three kinds of drugs and saw the heads of Triglav burned into three-sided toast. Fucked up.

Didn't even know the new Arkona was out already.

So, is that a recommendation?

The last thing I want to listen to is 70 minutes of folk metal, but I've spun this album twice in full today and I like it. It's got lots of layered synth bits and bobs, kind of like what Zemial did on their latest, and also the later Nokturnal Mortum albums. Without the blatant racism. Make of that what you will. There's no goofy, hokey, bouncy, Korpiklaanish shit on this record, it's all dark and melancholy and weird. The dealbreaker for some might be the abundance of synth (we're talking square leads, sampled drums in a few sections, hammond organ, more than the typical folk/symphonic stuff) in the mix. Against all odds, I like it.

I had been doing so well with cutting back on spending to pay off school, save for a few trips I'm taking this year....lost control yesterday and there are some mandatory releases coming out over the next few weeks too.
