They're practically the last national chain that actually stocks metal though. Those $7.99 sales keep me coming back and trying new bands.

It is still the same concept has Wal-Mart; and like with Wal-Mart t is one of the reasons indie stores can't stay open. But ain't that America, corperation destroying and taking over?

I'm sure places like Wal-Mart had an impact on indie record stores...10 years ago. Now they barely stock CDs at all, and the stuff they sell is targeted at people who would never enter an indie store in the first place.

My bad, I'm mistaken; no indie stores did not or do not make a good percentage of their income from mainstream releases. And I'm sure that their weren't indie stores going into FYE, Best Buy, and Wal-Marts to buy new releases for re-sale because their prices getting the stuff at less than the wholesale cost that indie stores have to pay. I'm am sure it is nothing like how the big chain stores put local business out of business. I'm also sure this had absolutely nothing to do with those indie stores that have had to close their doors.

I said it was a problem, but a problem from at least a decade ago. And its impact is arguably less than the whole MP3 revolution.

Sorry, but I feel zero guilt over buying a new Century or Metal Blade title at FYE on sale.

Justin I don't see you ever feeling guilt over anything.
No matter if it was a decade ago the impact is long lasting, again it is the same with any small business. And I don't think I would say this was just a decade ago, there are still indie stores struggling due to this' just the same as Star Bucks takes out good coffee shops and Wal-Mart takes out local grocers. But maybe you can explain how it is different. Ok you don't drink coffee so that example does not matter to you. Obviously getting CDs for cheap is your thing so no matter if you are stealing them from babies that will be justified.

FYE is not in same boat as Best Buy or Wal-Mart.

Before FYE there was Sam Goody and Wall To Wall Sound all of which existed in the malls across America while independent record stores thrived. Greensboro had mall store, Best Buy, Record Exchange, Crunchy Music and BB's all at one time. Now we have Best Buy.

Consumers choosing downloads over physical product is a major cause, but it's also the major label's fault for selling cheaply to box lot chains and not supporting the little businesses. They are finding out now what they have done to destroy their own sales avenues.

I buy my metal from Best Buy and FYE now because it is only place left selling metal I want. Naturally, i buy the underground stuff directly if i can because BB won't carry it, but for the bigger labels i buy it at a store because at least these stores are still in business and providing people a job.

Unfortunately, short-sighted business models led to the partial destruction and collapse of the independent music retailer. There are plenty of indie stores still left, but just not here in Greensboro.

I'm well aware of those stores once existing, I have been buying albums since in 1982. And to say it was just bad business planning is a little shortsided I think. There is no way not to notice that chain retail stores had something to do with crushing the indie stores. I completely disagree with you on Wal-Mart and Best Buy being same evil as FYE? Does FYE sell stereo equipment? Do they sell food? Do they sell refrigerators/washers and dryers? Do they sell computers? They are an ENTERTAINMENT store - they sell us things that entertain us not anything else. So in the aspect of what they are in business for is very different in that they specialize in something where BB and WM do not, they cover everything and care very little about anything specific other than making profits.

If we want to argue whether FYE are big and corporate, well the same could be said walking into an AMOEBA MUSIC on the west coast. Those stores are so massive and keep so much inventory how could they not be "corporate"? Amoeba on Sunset (or whatever BLVD in Hollywood) was the size of 5 FYE's put together. So are they evil for carrying all the music and options customers would want to purchase?

But back to question of what can and cannot be found between the two stores here is just within the last few months things i though Best Buy might have had but didn't so i had to get from FYE. New releases by these bands naturally.

so here is one example of two of the biggest metal labels in the USA and their varying degree of stocking new releases. we won't even delve into the Metal Blade variance of stock.

FYE is necessary as has ANY record store in a mall setting. Not all cities are able to have had or have an indie store so these places have survived the fallout (so far) despite usually having much higher pricing than most places. Some record labels have lowered list prices and they are evident when flipping through their stacks of metal. But to say they are evil as being one of THE LAST nationwide music/movie retailers is picking the wrong fight in my mind.

Do you think the labels BB carries are bitching about selling physical product from their storefront? I doubt it. Sales are sales and labels will take them anywhere they can get them these days.
