MONDAY MORNING APOCALYPSE. Wtf? Sounds like an emo band. Yet Recreation Day was one of my favorite albums, so I was looking forward to this all the same.

Then they posted the samples.... The riffs are generic BS and there's absolutely nothing interesting musically or lyrically. They're also making a video ALREADY for the title track, which seems to be driven by that generic ****ing phrygian riff. Spammage is sure to ensue... On top of everything they keep talking about how they're going to look for a major record label.

*Fists clenching*

Heard the clips, and I can understand what you're talking about. I also thought Recreation Day was absolutely amazing, and that Inner Circle was a good enough album on its own but nowhere near RD. Let's not be too superficial and judge an entire album based on three minutes worth of listening, the album art and the title. I'm going to try and be open minded about this one.

Oh, and about the major record label: who cares? Why wouldn't you want to see a good band become successful? Better Evergrey than some Fall Out Boy clone.

Evergrey has never really done it for me. No matter how much praise they get and no matter how much I try to give them the chance, the music's just missing... something.

the samples don't really say much, but going on a major record label does because most bands are pretty much sellouts on there IMO. I'd be surprised if Evergrey kept making progressive music as good as recreation day if they were on a major label. Very few bands seem to make the music they want on the big labels.

i don't understand why they've decided to put up a pre-order already. seems like a blind buy to me, especially considering the clips. I'm going to see them at the March 7th London preview show, and will make my decision then.

I was a huge Evergrey fan years ago when they did their first US show at Powermad '99..sadly, none of their cds has grabbed me like S*D*T did, & I'm rather burnt out on them now. Great guys, for sure, but I'll likely be at the bar during their PPUSA set.

That said, it IS a bit of a stretch to be judging the new cd by a mere fraction of its content.

Evergrey is one of my favorite bands. And i never expect something i won't like from them. But these samples didn't make my day happier i must say. Surely i can't make any decision from samples. Gotta hear the whole thing.

Its not as dark, depressing or heavy as there other albums, but it still sounds like them..I'll admit the vocal fx is a bit cheesy, but even that could be worse (i.e. using a megaphone..)

and is it me or do I hear a 7 string in there?

Yes, they switched to seven strings recently :) I don't know if it is good or not. I somehow couldn't like Petrucci tunes which he made after he got a seven strings axe.

Now that you mention it, Solitude etc. is rather underrated. It is an amazing disc, but ISoT is still near and dear to my heart due to the fact that it was my first Evergrey. Ohhhh yeah.

They don't sound too bad.

Now, if it had the Lars-trashcan-sounding drums, then a red flag would go up.

What he said.

I just picked up The Dark Discovery though and lked what I heard. I'm still pretty excited for this. I mean, why not? Even if they signed to a major record label, so what? It's not that big of a deal, is it?

Evergrey never really did it for me either, but this stuff doesn't sound all that bad. It's not as good as some of the other stuff I've heard from them, but it's not the worst. The riffs are a tad generic, though, I will give ya that.
