New Evergrey album (is going to suck)

I'm not rushing to call them sellouts, but I've heard half the album and it is very disappointing, most of the material is far too simplistic and pandering (Lost and The Dark I Walk You Through are easily the worst Evergrey songs to date), and the production simply does not work. Getting pop producers to handle metal is like entrusting a manicurist with a triple bypass.
PS: Just heard Still In The Water...bleagh. Evergrey has pulled an In Flames on us.

Too many people want their favorite bands to just keep re-writing the same material over and over to keep them happy. Luckily, most good bands don't care to appeal to those narrow-minded listeners and instead take risks musically, change their sound and approach from time to time, and do what THEY feel is best for THEIR music, not YOUR music.

People always say that EXACTLY--gee, the band's changing their sound, it's a good thing, etc etc... Well I wouldn't care if it was for the better. But this album is like the exact opposite of taking a risk--a progressive band starts putting out music actually designed to appeal to the mainstream. And also ironically, Monday Morning Apocalypse is the first Evergrey album that IS influenced by what other people feel is best for their music. Mainstream people. Maybe the producers, idk.

I can understand if you're disappointed with the new Evergrey... but to compare this album to recent In Flames is pure lunacy.

I've heard 7 tracks from the new Evergrey, and I love it. I know they've cultivated a very rich, special sound within the prog/power genre... and their fans are passionate about it. Many of the elements that made Evergrey great are missing on the new platter... but are replaced by new elements. I know it's more commercial and more straight-forward... but I think the strength of their songwriting shines through. It's certainly not a engrossing, cerebral listen like "In Search of Truth", but it's great for what it is. This is what modern "popular metal" should sound like. It's fresh, energetic and tight.

You don't exactly have proof that they weren't influence by the mainstream either though.

So since nobody knows, saying that Evergrey was influenced by the new producer and by mainstream fans is just as valid as saying that they weren't.

But whether something is mainstream or not doesn't in itself make it good or bad. Mainstream music can still be good. This album is good, it just isn't as good as their previous ones.

Well, I got banned from the EG board in the early frenzy of how bad the album was.

Basically, I was right on many points I made of the expectations of the album:
1. They signed a one album deal with SPV
2. They kept touting these "big" pop producers (Britney SPears, Def Leppard)
3. Recent mainstream success and acclaim (DVD, Grammy, #1 in Sweden)

So my thoughts were that they were poising themselves for a major label move soon, which would entail them going light, which they were doing for a couple albums. Well, it turned out to be true and the fanboys couldn't handle it.
