New Fan

I didn't notice any arrogance in any of Symphony X. They're just a bunch of really cool musicians who value their fans more than anything.

Most guitarists would probably have a huge ego if they could play like Romeo. However, Romeo himself has zero ego, which is so cool.

Portnoy's ego is well documented by this point, but Ive also heard stories about Petrucci. Like during the IaW tour he had his tech get on his hands and knees and operate the wah pedal FOR him. And someone was telling me once how he was friends with the guy doing DT's live sound and he got into and argument with Petrucci. It eventually ended with John saying something like "nononono let me make this clear....I'm *JOHN PETRUCCI*". Needless to say, the mixing dude walked at that point. I've also heard that since the G3 tour Petrucci's ego has been inflated a lot more.

On the obverse side tho I hear Rudess and LaBrie are actually really cool.

Man, what a jackass. What would be awesome is if one of Petrucci's influences put him in his place by telling him how much of a little arrogant prick he is.

Portnoy may have the biggest ego, but I've never heard any tales of him being a dick to the fans. He was cool when I met him.

Rudess and LaBrie ARE the coolest (so is Myung, but he's just so shy).

Romeo seems almost uncomfortable with all the attention. He is very graceful, but he attempts to divert attention from his playing by pointing out other aspects about himself, such as the fact that he's just a normal guy playing music. The rest are cool. Lepond's the coolest.

My brother just downloaded Communion And The Oracle.

OMG, do I love that song! especially that little thing they do at 0:50 or so. The sheer beauty of the vocals and everything in that song just blows my mind.

Yo Sympozium, I like your sig...

Do symX have any catchy guitar harmonies or something similar to that?
Um, actually not really. They have a lot of crazy key/guitar shred harmonie parts during their blazing solo sections, but no real melodic guitar harmoies during the choruses and verses like power metal bands or COB or Iron Maiden do, but it would sound out of place if they do

For a new fan, I'd recommend The Odyssey as a starting point.
I'm new to the band & picked up that disc. I can't say enough about this band. Why the hell aren't they huge?! Or at least at the same level as Dream Theater?! I must point out that there are very few bands in the prog/metal genre that wind my watch. These guys are true masters of their craft. Can't you tell I'll "geeked" about this band? So after Odyssey, what would you guys recommend?! Please if you could bust me an email with your recommendations...
Thanks In Advance

Divine Wings of Tragedy. Then V. Then Twilight in Olympus. Then Damnation Game. Then the S/T album.

Depends on your taste, the only thing I agree on is that S/T should be the last album you buy.

If you're into guitar virtuso type stuff that's more aggressive, go for DWOT or Odyssey.

If you like a more keyboard driven concept album, go for V.

I don't know where Twighlight and Damnation Game fit in... I guess Damnation Game is a really neoclassical album and Twighlight in Olympus is a mix of all of the others...

Just my take on things.

Um... get V!! It's the fan favorite for a reason - it's amazing! It shows the other side of Symphony X, very different from the Odyssey. After that, DWOT. Then the other 3 in any order (probably s/t last, aren't they redoing it anyway?).

I think I had a pretty good order. LOTEOF, V, Odyssey, DWOT, and today I'm ordering Damnation Game. Next paycheck is TIO and s/t.

Im one to prefer DWoT over V. I think as far as individual songs go, DWoT has some of SyX's very best (Sea of Lies, Out of the Ashes, Accolade, The title track, Candlelight Fantasia, Eyes of Medusa, and of course, Of Sins and Shadows - arguably their best "short" song). While I dont think V has as many classic individual songs, being a concept album, they're sort of meant to be listened to in succession, so its sort of a "the sum is more than the parts" kind of thing.
